Every May I wonder how the phrase "May Day" became a distress call. Now I know---and it's a disappointingly mundane explanation. Sometimes everyday life is so...everyday.

Welcome to Copper #57!

One last gasp of winter's wrath in Chicago, combined with Anne E. Johnson's mention of misheard lyrics elsewhere in this issue, led me to the title above. I hope that you're somewhere snug and warm, enjoying your discs---or downloads, streaming, or whatever.

The recent Axpona show outside Chicago was an overwhelming success---literally so overwhelming that half a dozen fast-moving reporters might've been to cover it all, but I surely couldn't, by myself. Some of my impressions can be found here; we hope to have additional coverage in Copper #58.

Dan Schwartz's marathon chat with legendary promoter/raconteur Rikki Farr continues here, covering everything from English gangsters to discovering Keith Emerson, to yet another thing Yoko screwed up.

Welcome to Copper #56!

With the recent Montréal Audio Fest, the western hemisphere's spring show season is officially underway. Our resident Montréalais Richard Murison took a look around the show, and his report is here. Soon after you read this, Axpona will be underway in suburban Chicago, and we'll be there to bring you the sights.

Our resident LA musician, Dan Schwartz, had a lengthy conversation with concert promoter/raconteur Rikki Farr, known for being an early promoter of the Beatles and for his association with the Isle of Wight festival. The first of three installments is here. I think you'll really enjoy this.

Galen Gareis concludes his two-parter on speaker cable design, here. Thanks to Galen for all his efforts with the extensive cable series. It's a tough subject, for a tough audience!

Our regulars offer a lot of enjoyable reading this issue. Larry Schenbeck concludes his second two-parter (confusing, no?), Violin +Orchestra; Dan Schwartz tells us about the sound of microphones; Richard Murison goes from the specific to the general, with a look at Hi-Fi Shows; Roy Hall's 20th column, "Mykonos", appears in this issue. In classic Hall style, the story includes a far-away place, alcohol, deception, and nudity. I'm truly glad I was able to cajole you into writing, Roy! Anne E. Johnson brings us indie artist Michelle Zauner ; Industry News looks at debt, and a number of companies that have been killed by it; and I look at the messy topics of ergonomics and that damned past. Anne also brings us Something Old/Something New, featuring  recent recordings of the Schubert masterpiece, Winterreise.

Copper #56 concludes with a classic twisted cartoon by Charles Rodrigues, and a beautiful Parting Shot from Paul McGowan.

Woody Woodward and Jay Jay French will both return next issue.

It's a little odd when holidays come in clumps of threes---but then, I'm not sure if April 1st could properly be considered a holiday. Whatever. Be safe, and enjoy yourself.

John Seetoo  contributes a brief but insightful interview with legendary jazz artist/composer Lalo Schifrin, who incidentally recorded on Audio Fidelity, many years back. Galen Gareis is back, continuing his series on cable design with the first of two parts on speaker cables . Gautam Raja takes a look at three little words that should leap off the tongue of anyone who considers themselves a scientist. Why is it so hard to say, "I don't know"? [FWIW: I don't know. ;->]

Copper #55 wraps up with a classic cartoon from Charles Rodrigues that explores the sad fate of a disenchanted audiophile.  Our virtual back cover is a Parting Shot of the Austrian hill country by Paul McGowan.

Welcome to Copper #54!

Beannachtai Na Feile Padraig Oraibh! ---which is allegedly, "St. Patrick's Day Blessing Upon You!" in Gaelic. My middle name's Moore, and I am of Irish heritage, but I can't vouch for the accuracy of the translation. Yet.

March did indeed come in like a lion in many parts of the country--- I hope you're digging out, and have power. It's a little tough to read Copper without power of some sort!

John Seetoo  concludes his interview with  Bobby Pulhemus, who recorded on Audio Fidelity as “Bobby Palomino”, lead guitarist of The Teemates. Next issue we'll have John's interview with a far better known Audio Fidelity artist---and I think you'll enjoy it. Galen Gareis is back, continuing his series on cable design with a piece on XLR design.

Welcome to Copper #53!

Our very first issue appeared on March 7, 2016. It's hard to believe that we've been at this for two years now; we've come a long way since then, in terms of content, layout, and circulation. We've got big plans for the future, and hope you stick with us in the months (and years!) to come.

John Seetoo continues our look at the history of pioneering label Audio Fidelity. In this issue, John interviews Bobby Pulhemus, who recorded on AF as "Bobby Palomino", lead guitarist of the Beatles-esque NY group, The Teemates. I think you'll find the story of  The Teemates  interesting--- and sad. In our other featured article, Gautam Raja brings us his thoughts on what it means to be a true non-believer.

Professor Schenbeck  leads off the issue with the terrifying words, "Choose your parents carefully"---and goes on to tell us about musical daughters.   Dan Schwartz tells us about playing in the Buffalo Springfield tribute concert with the Wild Honey Orchestra; Richard Murison goes off the rails---on cross-country skis;  Jay Jay French remembers forty years of speakers; Roy Hall goes out to the middle of nowhere, for real; Anne E. Johnson tells us about the indie group Piano Club, which rarely uses a piano (?!?) ; Woody Woodward just gets started on the subject of rockabilly---and go, cat, go!  Industry News brings news of changes at Sony, and the soap opera that is---you guessed it; and I write about fun, and oxymorons. Anne will be back next issue with another Something Old/Something New survey review.

Copper #53 wraps up with another classic audio cartoon from Charles Rodrigues, and a Parting Shot from Vasilis Lakakis. It may be a little fuzzy, but I found it amusing--- I hope you do, too.

I'd like to thank all our readers for supporting us for two years, and to thank all our contributors, without whom we'd have nothing to share. Welcome to Copper #51!

We've passed New Year's, we've passed CES, and the whole world seems to be recovering from the flu. We hope you're either well, or on the mend.

Our Area 51 is more of a known quantity than that one out in the desert, and we can talk about it without fear of retribution (we hope). Having concluded the three-part series Time is of the Essence,  Belden engineer Galen Gareis moves on to RCA interconnects. Part 3 concludes  John Seetoo’s interview with Tom Fine, son of Robert Fine and Wilma Cozart Fine, and a  skilled recording/mastering/archival engineer himself.

This issue has a nice mix of good music, tech, and the just plain weird (well, how else to describe the combination of CES and Roy Hall's Abenteuer in Deutschland?).  Larry Schenbeck goes from the small scale to the BIG; Dan Schwartz moves from basses to bassists with a look at the amazing Danny Thompson; Richard Murison examines the familiar Fletcher-Munson curves in an unfamiliar way; Jay Jay French moves from software to hardware---namely, his stereo equipment over 40 years, starting with turntables ; Duncan Taylor discovers again the perils of live recording, especially in a haunted church; Roy Hall takes on the Third Reich---and wins, this time; Anne E. Johnson brings us the shape-shifting indie artist, David Myles ; Woody Woodward remembers the magic voice and too-short career of Nat King Cole;  and I ponder my trip to the Magic Kingdom of Las Vegas for  CES, and consider what it means to be an Editor for over 35 years, while leafing through a big batch of old Stereophile magazines.

Following  Industry News on two companies we've discussed before and a photo feature on CES, Copper #51 wraps up with another classic audio cartoon from Charles Rodrigues, and a striking Parting Shot from Paul McGowan. Something Old/Something New will return in Copper #52, with a survey review from Anne.

After our 50th issue went live, and the importance of that milestone sank in...it occurred to Ye Older Every Day Editor that the magazine has never properly acknowledged our contributors with a masthead. Let's correct that here and now in Area 51, with a listing of our regulars, as well as all those who have contributed in the past. Some appeared once; others, several times. Welcome to Copper #46!

For music lovers, it is the best of times and the worst of times. I'd wager that we have greater access to a larger library of recorded music than at any time since---well, since recorded music became available. The bad part? A lot of the current output is unlistenable, both musically and sonically.

In the spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday as observed and celebrated in in the US, I'll focus on the "best of times" part. I'm thankful for the good stuff; thankful for the growth of Copper and of our faithful readership; thankful for the opportunities I have to work with talented and interesting people.

And I'm thankful that one of those talented people is about to return to our pages. Professor Larry Schenbeck's Too Much Tchaikovsky column will return, beginning next issue.

Dan Schwartz leads off #46 with the story of how the megahit song, "All I Wanna Do" was created by the Tuesday Night Music Club; Richard Murison has fallen in love a little bit with Jenna Mammina, as many of us have---and thanks to Cookie Marenco, Copper readers have a special deal on Jenna's latest album and other titles from Blue Coast Records; Jay Jay French reviews the first batch of albums, as the '67 Psychedelic Shootout continues; Duncan Taylor looks at the special problems of recording drums; Roy Hall tells an incredible tale of Botticelli, Nazis, and heartbreak; Anne E. Welcome to Copper #41!

The title isn't to announce a James Taylor retrospective---sorry to crush your hopes--- but is just what I see in today's weather reports. The Pacific Northwest, where I'm bound for a long-delayed vacation, is up in flames, along with  many other parts of the tinder-dry US. Meanwhile, back in my former home of Florida...they've already had nearly two feet of rain, and Hurricane Irma is not even close to the state yet.

I'm really pleased and excited to have Jason Victor Serinus back with us, with the first part of an intensive introduction to art song. Jason brings tremendous knowledge of the field, and provides plenty of recorded examples to listen to, and in the case of videos, watch. Welcome to Copper #40!

The old expression "a miss is as good as a mile" seems to apply to the recent eclipse: those of us in the 90% range of totality were underwhelmed, while those who got The Full Monty talk about life-changing experiences, incredible emotionality, blah blah.

"Life-changing"? Sorry: my life has a lot of inertia, and it takes a lot to change it. Maybe I'll see 100% in my old hometown of Carbondale, come the '24 eclipse. Then we'll see. ;->

I'm happy to welcome back our resident foodie Chloe Olewitz.  Just in time for summer's end, Chloe explains the difference between ice cream, gelato, sorbet---all that frozen stuff. Chloe's next piece will be about martial arts---so be nice!

Welcome to Copper #39!

For many of us, it's almost time for the kids to head back to school. For those of us who've passed those years, it's almost time to curse the congestion caused by all those damn schoolbuses.....

I'm happy to introduce another new feature to Copper, starting with this issue. Charles Rodrigues contributed cartoons with a perverse audiophile bent to Stereo Review for decades, actually starting way back when it was Hi-Fi Review (he also contributed some truly sick stuff to National Lampoon in the '70's, but let's forget that for the moment). We've secured the rights to reprint Rodrigues' Stereo Review cartoons, and will be reprinting one in each issue. For those who remember Rodrigues' work, enjoy! And for our younger readers who may not know him---welcome to the club!

Welcome to Copper #38!

Just as there are continual changes in the audio business, we've got some changes here at Copper.

I'm excited to introduce yet another new writer: Gautam Raja is an essayist and editor, and happens to be an audiophile who works in the biz. Gautam has a number of insightful observations about our wacky little world to offer---and this is just the first of them.

Larry Schenbeck has been a faithful contributor to Copper since the very first issue, and his columns have explored great and not-so-great performances of all types of "serious" music--=always treated with Larry's light, humorous touch. He's going to be taking a well-deserved sabbatical for a spell. We thank Larry for his incredible work, hope he enjoys his time away, and look forward to his return in the future.

Professor Schenbeck leads off the issue with suggestions of values and maxims for music-lovers; Dan Schwartz writes about his adventures with Roon; Seth Godin writes about the cultures of wine and chocolate; Richard Murison writes about analysis in art, not audio this time; Duncan Taylor tells about recording Flobots---and no, they're NOT Flowbee-wielding robots, as I thought! Welcome to Copper #37!

As temperatures topped triple digits in much of the US, I flashed back to the days when I kept physical media in my car. In the cassette era, you could end up with  a hopelessly-stretched-out tape if you played it after it lay in the sun.  (Remember seeing unfurled cassettes in the gutter by the side of the road, tape flapping uselessly in the breeze? I think that sight inspired those stupid wavy-armed inflatables at car dealerships.) CDs could and would delaminate, flake, crack, and grenade your player. God help you if one blew up in the bowels of a changer!

Moist heat, dry heat---did it matter? I don't think so, but the blazing sunshine I knew in Florida is nothing compared to the searing UV of a sunny day at 5,000 feet. Bald heads beware!

These days  I completely avoid the issue of heat-damaged physical media in my car. Solid state storage? Nope. I don't drive all that much, and I simply listen to the radio.

Retro, no?

I'm pleased to announce a new column, and the return of one of our original columns. Roy Hall--- founder/principal of Music Hall, world-traveler, curmudgeon, connoisseur of Scotch whisky---will be contributing Music'al Notes. Roy will be telling tales of his adventures in the audio biz over the last several decades---or whatever he damn well feels like telling. His stories may be a little saltier than what you're used to reading in Copper---but that's Roy, and travel isn't always Facebook-friendly. I hope you enjoy Roy's stories, the first of which appears here.

Seth Godin is a New York Times-bestselling author and a guru to an entire generation of marketers. Seth's also an audiophile whom we're fortunate to call a friend---a friend who was not only instrumental in the birth of Copper, but named it, to boot. Seth contributed his column Hobgoblin to our first eight issues; lately, he's been tied up with new books, seminars, and an alt-MBA program...in other words, standard Seth stuff.

Our readership has grown exponentially since those early issues, and those columns aren't that easy to access (it's on my To Do list, believe me). So, for the next eight issues, I'm happy to be reprinting Seth's Hobgoblins. If we're lucky, I'll be able to twist his arm for more. Here's Seth's first column.

I recently crossed the Continental Divide, twice...going west, then coming back home, going east. And now we've passed the Chronographic  Divide of this year. The difference is that there's no going back across this divide, and it's all downhill from here.

There's a lot going on in this issue. Professor Schenbeck offers a a review of some high points of the classical guitar catalog;  Dan Schwartz explains why he would never, ever review cables;Richard Murison digresses on a chase; Jay Jay French recalls why 1967 was the year rock 'n' roll became Rock; Duncan Taylor introduces another young musical phenom, Bella Betts ; Anne E. Taylor brings us the young indie artist Little Simz; Woody Woodward looks back at Firesign Theatre; Dan McCauley reviews the latest from Benjamin Booker; Industry News looks at the good news/bad news/more bad news from Spotify; and I  ponder that whole audio evangelism thing a little more and conclude the series on horns.

Our features are particularly strong this time out: John Seetoo returns with an in-depth 2-part interview with mastering legend Steve Hoffman; Jim Smith looks at EQ, DSP, and maybe a few other abbreviations; and finally, for something completely different----we have a short story by Paul McGowan.

As if to answer the admittedly-overwrought question, "is there nothing our polymath Publisher can't do?" (>cough<)---Copper #36 wraps up with another Parting Shot from Paul.

Lately, I've been blathering a lot about aging, even right here in this space last issue. I'm afraid that Dan Schwartz's piece in this issue about Harry Pearson has further fueled that whole looking back/looking inward thing. Shall we call it "retro-introspection"?  Sounds awkward enough and pretentious enough to be the title of a NYT bestseller.

But let's look at the here and now---or even the hear and now. Let's extract ossicles from assicles (!) and move forward.

Our columnists this issue cover such a wide range of topics and music, that I can't help but smile. Typing the names of some of these artists is challenging enough----please don't ask me to pronounce them!

Larry Schenbeck leads off the issue with a survey of  the works of 20th-century (and 21st!) minimalist composer György Kurtág (!); Dan's previously-mentioned piece on Harry Pearson is next; Richard Murison offers some fascinating perspective on Moore's Law; Jay Jay French continues his story about THAT CUSTOMER on Lawn Guyland; Duncan Taylor introduces us to versatile musician Seth Glier; Anne E. Johnson looks at the work of unique/unspellable/unpronounceable Icelandic artist Jófríður Ákadóttir (!!), who is mercifully also known as JFDR; Woody Woodward takes an affectionate and retro-intospective (!!!) look at Southern rock and the late Gregg Allman; Anne is back again with reviews of a number of lute recordings; and Industry News looks at changes at Bang & Olufsen. I write about what we do to save audio (no pressure there!), and continue our historical look at horn loudspeakers.

Welcome to the 34th issue of Copper! As I approach yet another birthday, I'm struck by the changes that come with age. Some have come with maturity (I think); others are clearly just signs of wear and tear. For example: in my younger days, I would agonize over any bit of criticism I received, especially if that criticism was of something I'd written. At this point, I'm pragmatic enough to know that I do the best I can, given the constraints of time and my own ability. Pretty much anything can be improved, given additional time, attention and tweaking...but just as in manufacturing, there comes a point at which a line must be drawn, changes cease, and (as our friend Seth Godin says) you have to ship it. For me, the ability to let go of something, anything---an essay, a relationship, or even a grudge---has been one of the hardest things to learn in life. I'd like to ascribe that ability to let go to maturity, not indifference. Wear and tear? A few years ago, I drove from Boston to Sarasota, non-stop. A day later I flew to Denmark for a week-long consulting gig, then flew home to Florida. I was okay within two days. My recent trip to Munich left me exhausted and foggy for a week. The difference a few years have made in my ability to recover from travel-abuse has been eye-opening, and more than a little frightening. The stories in this issue's Industry News seem to me to demonstrate aging without gaining wisdom. Sears and Radio Shack were among America's leading retailers for many decades---and then didn't respond to changing times. Can a business become senile? I think so. The rest of our columns are more upbeat: Professor Schenbeck looks at an element of music that we oh-so-serious musicophiles and audiophiles often overlook: is it FUN? Beatles acolyte Dan Schwartz offers his own unique take on the importance of Sgt. Pepper on its 50th anniversary; Richard Murison takes a side-trip into the bewildering world of patents; Duncan Taylor introduces us to still more amazing musicians; Anne E. Johnson introduces another unique indie artist, Andy Suzuki; Dan McCauley provides this issue's album review, the newbie from The Mountain Goats. I grumble about sleeplessness and music, and continue my look at horn speakers. Our friend Jim Smith discusses that audiophile ideal, the dedicated listening room. As promised in the last issue, I review my experiences at the Munich show---including the joy of the biergarten! As you read this, I'll have just returned from the  Munich  High End show, the largest audio show in the world. Or at least the Western world, if we must split hairs.

To my shame, I've never been to the Munich show before. While I'm looking forward to it, I have a bit of angst regarding my very rusty high school Deutsch, no matter how many times folks assure me that it won't be a problem. Oddly, I can still recall several of the dialogues I had to memorize for Frau Shelton, 45 years ago---but I don't really anticipate having too many discussions about how high the grass is!

I'm reminded of the old joke, first told to me by a Dane who speaks six or seven languages:
-What do you call someone who speaks three languages?   ---Trilingual. -What do you call someone who speaks two languages?  ---Bilingual. -What do you call someone who speaks ONE language?  ---AMERICAN.

Hilarious, no? (Okay, no.) I believe my testy response was, "if our country was as TINY as yours, we'd have to speak six or seven languages, also." Oh, well.

At any rate: I hope to have a feature about the Munich show in the next issue---possibly the next two, if there's enough of interest to show you. I certainly won't bore you with the same old tired stuff you've already seen ten times.

Meanwhile, I think we have another strong issue. Professor Schenbeck leads off with his look at classical concept albums, Dan Schwartz writes about Bernie Leadon and the Flying Burrito Brothers ; Richard Murison examines the thorny issue of sample rate conversion; Jay Jay French tells a tale of a high-end system delivered in Long Island; Duncan Taylor goes down the long list of talented folks he's recorded; Anne E. Johnson introduces us to Pura Fe'---and I urge you to listen to this artist, who sounds like Bonnie Raitt one minute, Steely Dan the next;  our record reviews were both new, last issue---Anne is back with the Something Old part; Industry News tells about texting music (?) and the latest chapter in big retail; and I write about  music education (or lack of it), and the next segment of  the horn speakers saga.

As promised last issue, John Seetoo is back with a terrific interview with Chad Kassem, possibly the busiest guy in audio. We're happy to have our old friend Ken Kessler back as well, with another look at Neglected Artists. Think of this installment as the Lost Chapter....

Welcome to Copper #32!  If you're a reader of fine print (and who amongst our readers is not?), you've probably noticed that the legend on our cover has morphed from "Journal of Music & Audio" to "Music, Audio & the Good Stuff".  Fear not, faithful reader: we're not abandoning our focus upon audio technology and history and in-depth looks at all kinds of music-making---we're just going to occasionally look at other fields of endeavor where artisans strive for excellence. We all know dedicated audiophiles who are equally devoted to cars, watches, pens, wine...we're going to have expert introductions to those kinds of specialist, high-end interests.

Our first piece along those lines is about CHEESE, Gromit! Our new contributor Chloe Olewitz is a widely-published freelance writer based in New York--- who also happens to be a cheesemonger. Among other things, Chloe will explain just what a cheesemonger is (and no, it's not a cheese-eating dog, like Nipper on our cover---that would be a cheeseMONGREL).  I hope you enjoy her piece, and are inspired to  branch out from your cheese-comfort zone a bit.

Sure ya can. In our features, we have Jim Smith back with Audiophile Therapy; Chloe Olewitz  presents that aforementioned piece on cheese; and reader-turned-writer Rudy Radelic tells us about his experiences at Axpona. Something Old/Something New contains reviews of records by two wildly-different artists: Damaged Bug and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra (!?!). Industry News has more bad news about retailer hhgregg, and the bizarre return of Neil Young to the contentious world of hi-res. We have three strong features: first, tube amp designer Roger Gibboni writes about that mysterious warmth; our friend Jim Smith is back with more answers to reader questions; and reader-turned-contributor B. The bizarre year proceeds apace as here in Boulder, we've had an uncommonly dry winter---as shown by the wildfires west of town, just before the last day of winter. The area would normally either be snow-covered or well-irrigated by snowmelt; this year it was dry as tinder. Meanwhile, major chunks of the rest of the country have been hammered with massive snowfall. Go figger!

I'm happy to introduce another new contributor, one you might not expect to be associated with the world of high-end audio. Jay Jay French was lead guitarist for Twisted Sister for many years, and all during that time, was combing the world for esoteric audio gear. These days, Jay Jay is a manager and entrepreneur, writes a column for Inc. magazine---and now will be writing about his audio adventures for Copper, under the heading of Twisted Systems. I hope you'll make him feel welcome here.

I'm also happy to introduce two new departments: High Society  will feature news from audio societies, including info on upcoming meetings and reports of recent meetings. This issue features the River City Audio Society of San Antonio, and we invite audio societies worldwide to send us their announcements and news. Something Old/Something New will feature record reviews from a number of contributors, starting this issue with something old from PSer Dan McCauley. Readers are invited to take a crack at reviews of new releases and interesting old records, 400-600 words, please!

Our usual columns open with Industry News regarding familiar names Radio Shack, Sonos, and Denon; Dan Schwartz writes about musician/mystic Terry Riley; Professor Schenbeck gets back to the subject of musical style; Richard Murison goes back to the stone age of digital sound; Duncan Taylor gets all moony about a new transport and the band Gipsy Moon; Woody Woodward  looks back at the work of  James Cotton; and I question who's minding the store?--- and look back at the old ways.

It honestly, really, truly  came as a shock to me when I realized that Copper's first anniversary was just ahead. Copper #1 went live on March 3rd, 2016---so this will have to serve as our birthday edition.

Our initial plan to publish on a weekly basis was hugely optimistic, and we quickly shifted to every two weeks. Notice that I don't refer to our publication schedule as "biweekly" or "bimonthly"...and here's why: "Biweekly: appearing or taking place every two weeks or twice a week." "Bimonthly: appearing or taking place every two months or twice a month."

What madness is this? It's as bad as "flammable" and "inflammable" being synonyms! Or "regardless" and "irregardless"! Aaaaghhhh!!

"Semi-monthly" would appear to be the correct term, as it means "twice monthly", and nothing more. But that would mean 24 issues per year, and....

Thus, "every two weeks".  English, she is a funny language.

But I digress.

This issue opens with Industry News about MQA; Dan Schwartz writes about the late Larry Coryell; Professor Schenbeck sprinkles on the Style; Richard Murison gets uncharacteristically irate about the Crown Jewels; Duncan Taylor writes about reggae, and introduces us to Intuit; and WL Woodward looks at funk. I continue the Spica saga with an interview with the brand's creator, John Bau, and rant about remembering in Cynic. Duncan does double-duty with Part 1 of an ambitious DIY subwoofer project; we talk with Cartoon Bob; and Jan Montana stirs up trouble with his listening buddies again. We wrap with an especially yummy  reader system of scarce'70's gear,  and a striking Closing Shot from Publisher Paul McGowan.

And now, a rare moment of sentiment from Ye Olde Editor: thanks for the tremendous support shown to Copper for the past year. I appreciate everyone who reads the mag, and I am especially thankful for those who take the time to write....and write...and write....;->

When Editor Leebs and I first envisioned the magazine, we wanted more than anything to accomplish two goals: build a thriving community and foster awareness for music, the arts, and high-end audio. I think we’ve succeeded. Copper’s circulation is approaching the 10,000 mark and shows no signs of stopping. The articles get better, the subject’s broader, the community the richer for it.

My personal and heartfelt thanks for all those that contribute, but mostly, to our readers who are the core of the community. I am honored to consider myself a member of this great group of people.---Paul McGowan, Publisher

When I came to PS Audio a year and a half ago to seek sponsorship for my Second Story Garage project, about two hours (!!) into my visit, Paul started to tell me about an available job he thought I might be good at. I walked out of the factory admittedly buzzing, but reality eventually set in and I was greeted with a difficult decision. The staff at my former employer, the local newspaper The Daily Camera, could not operate the Second Story Garage live video recording studio project without me. During my interview process with PS, I voiced a concern that my joining the team might mean that this amazing music project, my baby, could see its end. The management at PS is simply awesome, and they expressed that the passions of their employees were important to them. They were as interested in seeing my project survive as I was. The newspaper also had interest in continuing a partnership, even discussing a big future investment in a new studio. Unfortunately, the reality of today is that newspapers are contracting, not growing. In the time since I joined PS Audio, the newspaper has shed even more jobs, including two in the photo staff. Second Story Garage can’t function without adequate photo staff.

Right now, the Second Story Garage project is on indefinite hold, and has likely come to an end. I feel as though I should probably be sadder about it than I am---but I'm in a good place about the whole thing.

The fact is that YOU, dear reader, are the source of my uplifted spirit. This writing opportunity I've had with Copper, where I get to delve into my memories from Second Story Garage and share the stories and techniques and headaches… honestly, it's really been a gift to me on a personal level.

I want to thank you all for reading any of my techno twaddle (my binaural blather, or channel chatter) over the seasons. I don't use the best syntax or grammar, and I often emerge foggy-headed after cranking out a 1700 word column for DJ Leebs. But I continue to crank it out because every issue I'm given the chance to remember and savor a fascinating experience from the past. For that, again, I am grateful. I’m afraid my prime experience of writing for Copper, now that we’re a year into the project, is very selfish. Aside from getting to know Bill Leebens, it’s been about experiencing my own mind, post-stroke. I’ve found, that when I’m fairly excited by my topic, my spoken language gets hung-up. (My wife and adult daughter tell me that, at last, I’m like everybody else. To which I say, “Hah!”) But writing, you would think, would be different, and it is ---- to an extent. More than ever, however, I discover the truth of the saying, “Writing about music is like dancing about architecture”. I want to say, “Just listen!” But that’s not the job, and unlike the distant past, I struggle frequently to find the things that I want to say about the subject of my columns.

 But --- without HAVING to do this, I wouldn’t. So thanks to all of the readers, and Bill and Paul, for cracking the whip.---Dan Schwartz

Happy Birthday!

This issue commemorates the first anniversary of Copper Magazine.  It’s been a long strange trip and will continue thanks to all you readers out there.  I started when they asked me to write an article and I did write up the 2016 Grammy show.  That article was weird enough they asked me to write more and they’ve been sorry ever since, but they’re too nice to ask me to just stop already.

We have some wonderful writers and great content.  I thoroughly enjoy every issue and it keeps getting better.  In fact, I think the last issue is my favorite.  Thanks to Bill Leebens for his steadfast and patient editor work, and Paul McGowan who started the mag with Bill and allowed us to keep going.  And thanks to all of you for reading and writing.  Couldn’t do it without y’all. ---Woody Woodward

The first year of Copper saw the mag start from scratch and grow to 9,000 subscribers through steady, consistent growth. While it's not  the circulation of People magazine, you won't find any Kardashians here (other than in my occasional off-topic rants). We have grown steadily, and I think our content has steadily improved, as well.

The next few issues will introduce several new contributors, both columnists and feature contributors. I think you'll be surprised and pleased by the names you'll see, and the topics they write about.

We lead off the first issue of Copper's second year with Industry News about some major moves in the audio biz; amongst our regulars,  Dan Schwartz continues minimalist musings with a piece about Philip Glass; Professor Schenbeck takes a queasy look at Schoenberg; Richard Murison writes about a place where no one can hear you scream, mostly (and no, it's not space);  Duncan Taylor writes about  Ayo Awosika, a striking young jazz singer; and I write about cut-and-paste business, and finish my interview with John Bau of Spica. Woody Woodward is on vacation (boo, hiss), but will return to Copper soon.

In  this issue's features, Jim Smith writes about topics picked by Copper readers; Duncan's back again with Part 2 of his DIY subwoofer project; and as usual, we wrap with another In My Room reader system  and a Parting Shot from Publisher Paul McGowan.

I would never overtly diss a legendary Groundhog, but six more weeks of winter? It's going to be 68 deg F here in Boulder today---and 70 tomorrow!
I think the weather cadre got together and bribed Phil, for their own nefarious purposes....(Oops: plenty of folks in America are freezing right now. Never mind.)

We also have an unseasonably-warm issue of Copper, this go around. We're happy to present a piece by yet another new contributor, industry veteran Ethan Winer. In the past we've presented pieces by Ken Kantor and Jim Smith on what they see as common misconceptions or fallacies in audio, and Ethan discusses Audio Myths that just ain't so. I look forward to reading the comments that Ethan's piece will undoubtedly initiate.

Also featured in this issue, our guy Darren Myers wraps up the "CNC" DIY phono stage project, with circuit boards you can buy direct from us, parts lists, everything you'll need to build it, aside from a hot soldering iron. Jim Smith is back, probing the group psyche and asking, what do you want to read about?

From our usual crew, Dan Schwartz is wrapped up in the music of Steve Reich; Professor Schenbeck continues his series on musical elements with a look at style; Richard Murison gets all metaphysical about metadata; Duncan Taylor introduces the amazing spectacle that is Dirty Bourbon River Show--- imagine Tom Waits meets Louis Prima meets The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and you'll kinda get it; WL Woodward looks into four decades of Steely Dan; and finally, I kvetch about the IoT and look back at another beloved brand: Spica.

We open #26 with more Industry News, and close with another cool reader system, and an incredible Parting Shot.

Welcome to Copper #47!

I'm alarmed at how rapidly 2017 is disappearing, and I'll bet I'm not alone in that. The days are long, the years are short, yadda yadda....

As mentioned last issue, we're pleased to have Professor Larry Schenbeck back. Larry's Too Much Tchaikovsky column returns in this issue with the musical question, "How Moist Is Your Music??" Alrighty, then.

What are our other regular columnists up to? Well, Dan Schwartz examines what makes a bass a bass; Richard Murison begins a series on music-management software Music Brainz; Jay Jay French continues the '67 Psychedelic Shootout with a look at Are You Experienced; Duncan Taylor tells us how he captures the sounds of bluegrass in live recordings; Roy Hall remembers major parties to which he wasn't invited; Anne E. Johnson brings us Crying, an indie group that may give you '80's video game flashbacks; Woody Woodward looks at the rise and end of The Band in his best piece yet; and I remember audio industry legend Arnie Nudell, and look back at a music biz that just ain't no more.

Neither rain nor snow nor CES crud nor car crashes stays these Copper couriers from the swift completion of their deadlines....

Let's just say 2017 started with a bang. Literally.

NONETHELESS!---here we are. Copper #25 opens with yet another new feature, Industry News. I tend to think that the business aspects of the audio industry are every bit as interesting as the technical bits; I guess we'll see if readers agree. Dan Schwartz writes about rising star Courtney Hartman; Professor Schenbeck continues his series on musical elements with Melody;  Richard Murison writes about the hard journey to hard drives; Duncan Taylor brings a live performance from Jaden Carlson; our friend Jan Montana is back with a tale of those times when Memorex beats live; Jim Smith writes about why vinyl playback is rarely all that it could be; I take a look back at CES  and why Quad ESLs will live forever. We wrap with another reader system, and an image from Publisher Paul McGowan.

Let's hope the next few weeks are less trying---and we'll be back with our friend WL Woodward and  (after a few delays) the wrap-up on our DIY Phono Stage!

I have no desire to go off on a tangent here, so I'll keep it brief:

We try to make Copper a place of refuge. A place of entertainment, enjoyment, and education. We do what we can to edit out the intemperate and belligerent. We do what we can to encourage free expression in readers who write in with comments on our articles.

Some comments are, to be kind, overly-emphatic, even mean. We have readers from all works of life, and all levels of knowledge. You may know more than another reader. That's fine: feel free to share your knowledge in a gentle way. If you feel compelled to insult one of our writers or a fellow reader, do me a favor: don't include that in your comments, or it will disappear.

And sooner or later, so will you.

In Copper #24, Richard Murison explains what FLAC is all about; Dan Schwartz waxes lyrical on lyrics; Larry Schenbeck examines rhythm at a stately pace; Duncan Taylor returns with teen guitar whiz Jaden Carlson; and WL Woodward looks back upon musical life---and death---in 2016.  Our old friend Jim Smith considers why some systems sound terrific, but don't have soul. I look at the differences between creation and recreation; the history of the everlasting Quad '57 (with contributions from some notable colleagues); and poke around CES.  We wrap the issue with another beautiful image from Publisher Paul McGowan.

Really, what more is there to say? Right up to the last minute, the Reaper was ripping creative souls from our midst. Let's hope for a better new year.

In this issue, we start with Richard Murison explaining the convoluted concept of convolution, then go to Dan Schwartz for a tale of musical evolution ; Professor Schenbeck takes a look at the best musical releases of that annus horribilus, 2016; Duncan Taylor presents another killer local group, The Railsplitters ; and Woody Woodward takes a last, twisted look at Christmas music (no toys this time, but there is an extra-special performance). I pay homage to yet another friend and colleague who passed away this year, Ken Furst, and explore what readers and industry folk would've wanted as an audio gift, if they could just have one precious piece of gear back again.  Jim Smith is back with more on the ACK Attack; Ken Kessler is back also, with another batch of artists who really don't deserve to be forgotten; and in  our final feature, Darren Myers has an update on the "CNC" DIY phonostage.  This issue's reader system is a particularly attractive one, and our issue closes with yet another gorgeous image from Paul McGowan.

Welcome to Copper #20!

I think this is a particularly interesting issue, and I'm happy to tell you that we have some surprises and new contributors lined up in the next few issues.

The title above is using "hits" in the same way that Dan Schwartz used it in issue #16. Dan  looks at the roll call of musicians who've passed this year; his look at Leon Russell thankfully has some joyous music from Leon's incredible life and career. Richard Murison looks at sampling, after 50 years---and there may be a geek joke in that statement. Larry Schenbeck looks at bad manners in music; Duncan Taylor looks at another unusual experience in the studio and presents a local band that even curmudgeon me enjoyed;  WL Woodward continues the joy with his tale of growing up together with Stevie Wonder; and I examine the origins of Black Friday and the history of  legendary audio company, Weathers.

Jim Smith presents the finale of his Subwoofery series---but don't worry, he'll be back. Darren Myers has new DIY projects in the works; meanwhile, I invite like-minded readers to share their projects with the rest of us. Richard Murison is back---again!--- with good news for iTunes-using classical music fans; and finally, the issue is rounded out by another amazing reader system.

Welcome  to Copper #19!

Believe me, no one is more amazed that we're still doing this every two weeks than I am. After all, I was the recipient of the "Shortest Attention Span" award in my high school yearbook.... (Not really---I was one of the editors. Good story, though.)

I can only ascribe this to the fact that while I have numerous defects---ask my ex-wife---I am relentless, and just too mean to die.

But enough about me:

In this issue we're fortunate to have an entry from new contributor Kirsten Brodbeck-Kenney, one of the most-perceptive observers of the audiophile scene. If you think librarians are mild-mannered, you've never crossed Kirsten, who  holds her own with anyone, including irascible husband Malachi Kenney (remember  Hold My Beer 'way back in issue 10?).

I paid a visit to DeVore Fidelity  in Brooklyn a while back, and finally report on it here. We're still wrangling some problematic video footage from the visit, and hope to have it sorted out soon.

Speaking of relentless, Richard Murison continues analyzing the meaning of "lossless";  Jim Smith goes back to basics in subwoofers;  WL Woodward continues plowing through the music of his (and maybe your) life with an affectionate look at Doc Watson; Duncan Taylor looks at modern one-man bands;  Dan Schwartz takes a serious look at what's involved in making instruments these days, and Larry Schenbeck takes a look at some serious music; and I ponder where can audiophiles go when they're priced out of the neighborhood, and the materials that have made up audio products, past and present.

We also have another cool reader system, and invite you to send in your own. Paul McGowan will be back soon, and Darren Myers will return with a big new DIY project. Your patience is appreciated.

As we approach the annual Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, our home-town show (sorta), we have a lot yet to accomplish. In this issue I take a not-so-cynical look at the show in The Audio Cynic;  by the time you read this issue, the show will have come and gone, most folks will have made their way home, and we will probably have collapsed in a heap from exhaustion.

Next issue there will be tales to tell, pictures to share, maybe even a video or two.

Speaking of video---there aren’t any videos from me in this issue, but you can expect to see more of them in future issues. Before I traveled to NY and NJ recently, Mentor/Publisher Paul McGowan encouraged me to visit a number of our colleagues in the industry, and shoot video. Being a good Mentee/Editor, I did so.

You’ll see a few pics from my visit to VPI in this installment of Vintage Whine, and I did extensive video interviews with both Harry and Mat Weisfeld, and toured their factory and listening labs. To say that Harry’s collection of vintage gear is astounding, is to understate the case.

John DeVore was kind enough to invite me to the DeVore Fidelity facilities in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and in the video I shot,  you’ll see the infamous Monkeyhaus, along with some of John’s secret projects.

In this issue’s My Turn, you’ll get a look at the impressive new factory of our Colorado neighbor, Boulder Amplifiers. As you can imagine, it takes a lot of work to turn out those massive, sculptural amps!

Our regular contributors continue to work their magic: Richard Murison concludes his series on Sigma/Delta Modulators; Larry Schenbeck flagellates flageolets and other types of flutes; Paul McGowan takes a basic look at subwoofers, and Jim Smith continues his in-depth look at them in Subwoofery.  Dan Schwartz gets past Tuesday Night Music Club, and moves on to Thud.  Darren Myers continues with his series on How to Make a Vintage Component Sing Again---THE SEQUEL!.   Duncan Taylor writes about his adventures with acronyms and with recording couples. Our resident bard WL Woodward is taking a break this issue.

Welcome to Copper #16!

We’re excited by our recent additions. Many of you read Darren Myers’ first installment of Make It Yourself, on building an interconnect. Darren’s back with the first steps in reviving vintage components.

Paul McGowan is back with Back to Basics, writing about how much amplifier power you really need.

Jim Smith continues Subwoofery, his low-down series... with more yet to come.

Haden Boardman is back with Amplified & Equalized, a look at the next link in the phono chain, the phono preamp.

I take a look at the huge record store Twist and Shout, talk with turntable legend John Bicht, and look at the changes in upcoming audio shows.

Our usual contributors delve into sigma-delta modulators and music from Sheryl Crow, the Yonder Mountain String Band, Felix Pappalardi... and Bach? How’s that for a mix?

One last, personal item: I’m a longtime supporter of community radio stations, and my brother Chuck is heavily involved in community station WDBX, in Carbondale, Illinois. Welcome to Copper # 15!

Our contest in issue #13 produced dozens of interesting submissions in response to the question, “What’s really new in audio?” Those entries are featured in Incoming Letters, along with the occasional comment from me.

We have another new feature in this issue: Make It Yourself by Darren Myers. Every issue, Darren will feature a new project that you can, well, make yourself. Don’t be fooled by the interconnect in this issue---it’s an easy project, designed to produce confidence as well as an interconnect.

Things will get more complex in the future, so keep your soldering iron well-tinned.

Paul McGowan is back with the second installment of Back to Basics, answering the musical question, What is a CD Player? Paul will continue to work through the elements of sound reproduction. While this column is geared to newbies, most veteran audiophools can benefit from a refresher, no? I certainly can.

Jim Smith is back with parts 2 and 3 of Subwoofery, laying to rest some misconceptions, and leading us all to the path of enlightenment…and better sound!

Industry veteran Gary Yacoubian joins us with Who are the Modern Audiophiles?---which I think will provoke some commentary and debate.

Our columns this issue deal with the loss of a dear friend, liner notes, one of the best-selling records of all time, sigma-delta modulators, and great musical performances from the familiar (Glenn Miller) and the less-familiar (the extraordinary Roosevelt Collier), the question “where are they now?”, and another great reader system.

As is probably clear by now, we’ve decided to shake things up a bit. Our new format is designed to be more readable and more manageable. It will also allow readers to post comments directly after articles...and we’ll see how that goes. Kindly recall that “you suck!” doesn’t contribute to  stimulating, productive discourse...and I will be watching.

We’re pleased to present the first part of an incredible piece by Jason Victor Serinus, Opera 101 for those of us whose exposure to opera has never gotten beyond the thundersheets of the Decca Ring cycle. I shamefacedly admit to being part of that group, which is why we asked Jason to write for us.

Jason’s knowledge of opera is matched by his enthusiasm, and I hope that after you watch and listen to the numerous clips he’s selected, you’ll share some of that enthusiasm.  Opera is a fascinating and often beautiful medium, and doesn’t have to be intimidating.

Something else new in this issue: a contest! Read The Audio Cynic---ALL of it, not just the last paragraph!---and send us your idea of something that is unquestionably, uniquely NEW in audio. Below you’ll see a picture  taken during my recent trip to San Francisco, because to me it exemplifies this issue: a bridge from the past to the future. I hope you’ll stay with us as Copper continues to grow and improve!

As we draw nearer to the time of the World Series, we have several series featured in Copper #14---two concluding, two beginning.

Paul McGowan begins a new column, Back to Basics, in this issue. We realized that there are very few places for newbies to learn about the basics of audio, and in every issue of Copper, Paul will provide just such info.

Jason Victor Serinus’ two-part intro to opera concludes in this issue. Even if you’ve never made it all the way through an opera---or especially if you’ve never made it all the way through an opera--- I encourage you to listen to the exquisite clips Jason has chosen for his piece. I think you’ll find them revelatory.

Jim Smith begins an ambitious eight-part series on subwoofers; with Jim’s tutelage, you’ll learn that while subs may be all about the bass, there’s much more to them as well. (Sorry. Couldn’t resist.)

Ken Kessler concludes his look at audio in the UK.  I dearly wanted to be able to title this piece “Anarchy in the UK”, but as Ken wistfully commented, “it’s no longer anarchic.” Somehow that makes me sad.

In last issue’s Audio Cynic, I announced a contest, offering a new PS Audio LAN Rover for the best example of something in audio that is completely NEW. Paul McGowan and I have reviewed the entries, and the winner (FINAL! No appeals!) is Arturo Perez, who chose on-demand music as exemplified by the Amazon Echo. Echo may not yet be what we consider high-end audio quality, but just wait. The delivery mechanism is the thing, and I believe that it will be a game-changer for the industry.

Next issue we’ll present all the entries in full, along with my comments on each entry. Many were novel and entertaining, and I think you’ll enjoy reading them. Thanks to everyone who entered!

Welcome to Copper #11!

Wherever you are, we hope it’s not as hot and dry as it is here in literally-on-fire Colorado.

Here in mid-July, most folks are approaching some sort of break or vacation. We’ll keep plugging away, but the world of audio shows is about to go on hiatus, following the highly-energetic Capital Audiofest (and we’re happy to offer an amazing photo spread from CapFest by Eric Franklin Shook).

The Rocky Mountain Audio Fest is the next major show in North America, coinciding with the turning of the leaves here in early October. TAVES, in Toronto, quickly follows in November, and rumors are rampant about a show in NYC. We’ll see.

Next thing you know, CES, the show that wouldn’t die (but maybe should), will come along in January. And we start all over again.

Meanwhile: stay cool, hide in the basement, read Copper, and listen to music!
