The People Who Make Audio Happen: Living Colour Unplugged in the Studio

The People Who Make Audio Happen: Living Colour Unplugged in the Studio

Editor’s Note: In December 2024 a new high-end brand, Oneiros, the brainchild of Jerry Bloomfield, CEO of Oneiros and of Falcon Acoustics, and designer Graeme Bridge. Their new loudspeaker was launched at a New York City press event that featured the band Living Colour performing an acoustic set at Power Station recording studio. This wasn’t your typical shindig: Living Colour’s performance was recorded, and then mixed and played back over the new Oneiros loudspeakers for the assembled press. Copper's Harris Fogel was there.

Just attempting such a demonstration is quite a show of confidence. At $650,000 per pair the Oneiros speakers certainly aspire to lofty heights. The 3-way floorstanding towers feature monocoque carbon-fiber cabinetry akin to Formula 1 car construction, a 48-pound machined aluminum front baffle, custom-designed Twaron graphene woofers and Dyneema graphene midrange drivers, a diamond dome tweeter, gold-plated printed circuit boards, and a whole lot more. The speakers will begin shipping in the first quarter of this year.

Your editor wasn’t able to attend the press event but was able to hear the speakers at the 2025 Florida Audio Expo, where I heard a playback of one of the songs that was recorded at the press event. The FAE system was impressive in its ability to convey the live feel of the performance, in tonality, texture, scale, and depth. It was also exceptional on the other tracks I heard.

Here’s a look at the press event.

Living Colour relaxes before the gig. The band members are (L to R): Corey Glover (vocals), Will Calhoun (drums), Vernon Reid (guitar), and Doug Wimbish (bass).

Producer and engineer Ron Saint Germain recorded the band live at the event.

Ron St. Germain talks to the people in attendance. Germain has produced folks like Michael Jackson, Jimi Hendrix, Kraftwerk, McCoy Tyner and many more.

Doug Wimbish gets ready.

Will Calhoun lays down the beat.

Living Colour's Corey Glover, Vernon Reid, Doug Wimbish (back row), and Will Calhoun.

A good time was had by all. The event was co-sponsored by Oneiros, Fidelis Distribution, Nexus Audio Technologies, and PR firm Sohmer Associates.

High-tech equipment for high-tech speakers: here are the Bryston BCD-3 CD player, IDEON Audio Absolute DAC Epsilon Meta Edition, and JMF Audio PRS 1.5 preamp. The speakers were powered by JMF Audio HQS 7001 monoblock amplifiers (not shown).

The Oneiros Audio speakers retail for $650,000 a pair.

Walter Schofield of Nexus Audio Technologies gives the thumbs up.

The audio gang's all here: Walter Swanbon of FIdelis A/V, Jerry Bloomfield, Ron St. Germain, Walter Schofield, and Graeme Bridge.

Graeme Bridge and Jerry Bloomfield spent more than 100 hours on CAD development design time alone.

Will Calhoun and Vernon Reid hang out with Copper's Harris Fogel, and Will Calhoun.
