Too bright or just right?
*Chapter 14 of my upcoming novel, Resurrection, is posted here.
I can remember an interesting change in my system going from copper speaker cables to silver. What occurred follows precisely the cliche. My system got brighter, forcing me to make compensating changes.
But, did my system become bright or was it dull and now correct?
We know silver is a superior conductor to copper, yet for most of us, we started with a copper-based foundation. By that I mean we voiced our system: determined the precise amount of toe-in, room damping, VTA tweaking, USB enhancing—all the tricks of the setup trade to get the sound of copper just right.
What would have happened if we voiced the system around an all silver setup? Would we conclude that to be normal and copper now dull?
Our opinions are based around that which becomes the accepted norms.
Had we started first with another conductor, like silver, the cliche might be "Copper? Oh yeah, definitely a bit on the dull side."
