The law of gravity

My friend Seth is fond of pointing out the law of gravity. It doesn't matter what you believe or don't believe. If you jump off a ladder you're going to land on the ground.

Hard.

Gravity. It's the law whether we agree or disagree.

The laws of HiFi aren't as clearly defined nor agreed upon, though broken down into their component values they exist whether we believe they do or not. For example, a moving piston like a speaker driver pressurizes the air in cadence with its movement. If your eardrum is nearby it will move in response.

These are simply inarguable facts.

How about those electromotive forces powering that speaker driver? Can we say with any confidence a given amount of energy will move that speaker driver? Yes, of course we can.

Where the picture gets fuzzy is when we start to examine the thousands of steps leading up the the speaker's movement: how bits are converted to waves, how vinyl wiggles push and pull the needle.

Now we have so many variables it becomes increasingly difficult to predict for certain the outcome.

There are irrefutable laws we cannot argue with. Individually they are sacrosanct. Only when we begin mixing and matching their inarguable results into complex patterns do we get the arguable/unpredictable end products.

And that's when the fun begins.
