Designing for everyone

We don't design products for everyone. Never have. Probably never will. Just like we don't cook food that everyone likes. That kind of meal has to be bland enough to delight no one. The greater the level of delight, the higher the risk of offense. And more often than not, we design products that we know people won't like. The DMP is a good example. We designed this product to be the best two-channel optical disc player in the world. To accomplish that we had to sacrifice features: remove video capabilities, reduce menu options, limit what it can play. The DMP is not for everyone. It wasn't designed to be. The more narrow the focus, the better chance designers have of scoring a home run. You want bland and acceptable to others or perfect just for you?
