The other side

Good speculations on yesterday's question. Thank you.

On the subject of DSD's superior ability to capture music's essence (vs. a PCM capture) some speculated it might have something to do with the hardware.

Bingo. That's not the whole answer but it surely must be a partial one.

But, what of the other side? Playback. We have, for many years now, been the champions of DSD playback as evidenced in our DirectStream DAC. Unlike 99.9% of the DACs on the market today, ours doesn't use converted PCM at its output. Instead, we convert (or upsample) everything to DSD then output that pulse stream directly into the analog outputs of the DAC. The only processing we do to the final output pulse density stream (after all the magic inside the FPGA) is to amplify it and clean up the ultrasonic noise via an analog filter.

The DirectStream is, for this reason, one of the top DACs in the world.

Pure DSD either in or out of the playback chain works wonders on musicality.
