In our January Newsletter, which you can read here, I printed a story about a rising star, 18-year-old pop singer Billie Eilish, who swept the Grammys for her album When we all fall asleep, where do we go.
The album and work are dark and speak of suicide and depression in sometimes uncomfortable ways, but I think it’s a look at what most kids go through and no one wants to talk about. She does. Openly. Brilliantly. She’s honest and we believe her.
I like the work for a number of reasons: the music itself is genius. I haven’t heard anything that good and creative for some time. Secondly, it has good sound despite the fact the work was produced in her brother’s bedroom using pretty ordinary equipment: Apple Logic Pro X, a Universal Audio Apollo 8 interface, a pair of Yamaha HS5 nearfields with an H8S subwoofer, and an Audio Technika USB microphone for the vocals.
If you can handle some of her darker lyrics, she’s worth a listen.
