Give and take

It occurs to me that not all of us are of the understanding that speakers take and amplifiers give.

Not the other way around.

You can have the biggest most powerful amplifier in the world but it does nothing unless asked to. Think of it like a big and powerful car engine—one that has 1,000 horsepower available. It does nothing until you step on the pedal and request it to.

It is the loudspeaker that takes what it wants and needs.

It is the power amplifier's job to supply that need without any restrictions or hesitations.

The practical side of this understanding is that big or small, power amplifiers will not do anything on their own.

The speaker must make a request—like stepping on the gas pedal—and the challenge for any power amplifier is to meet that request without any hesitation.

When we think about the combination of loudspeaker and power amplifier, it is take and give. Not the classic give and take.
