Things worth remembering

I’ve managed to live approximately 26,800 days so far. That seems like a lot of days and yet my memory of all that’s transpired in that lifetime of days numbers fewer than one hundred.

We remember the highlights, the remarkable, the good, and the bad. The rest passes by in the blur we call the everyday.

Octave Record’s latest release celebrates those memorable moments. Clandestine Amigo’s Things Worth Remembering is a beautifully crafted work of art—perhaps our best recording of 2021.

And speaking of Octave Records, I am delighted to let you know our first vinyl release will be available beginning next week (there’s only 500 so first come, first served). Gabe Mervine’s Say Somethin’ is a fabulous jazz recording that we decided to release first. I’ve been playing the test pressings at home and they are, as one would expect, a new experience. The magic of vinyl is there in all its glory.

As soon as the limited edition single-pressing 180-gram vinyl discs are ready I’ll drop you a note.

    Things worth remembering indeed. A great new and budding record label that is pleasing many audiophiles around the globe including myself.

    Still loving that Red Meat disc from Otis Taylor. It really is a thing of beauty. 🙂

  2. A quick question Paul,

    Why is ‘Clandestine Amigo’s Things Worth Remembering’ perhaps the best recording released by Octave Records Recording of 2021( to date of course 😉 ) ? To put it another way, What did MR2 reveal that makes it a standout?

    1. We’ve been learning so much over these months and this record is really the culmination of all the knowledge and refinements. Several of the tracks on the first Clandestine Amigo are great recordings (Flying Blind still remains one of my all time favorite vocals), but with this latest release we’ve taken it notches higher.

      I would point a finger at the mixing which has gotten noticeably better with each project. I think much of that has to do with the mix engineers getting used to the routine and requirements of the label. Never have any of them ever had to work for a label whose final test is on a system like ours in Music Room Two. Normally, when it sounds good in the mix room they are done. That’s hardly the case here. And so I think their calibration of what they need to do to make it work on the IRS system is finally coming to fruition.

      1. Thanks for the reply Paul, and I’m glad everyone is learning. Being an audio moron, I guess what I was looking for (nuts and bolts) is what characteristics sonically are being improved from master A to the release. Or maybe easier, what should I be listening for? What I hear is detailed, natural and balanced. But with the piano it almost sounds like I’m inside of it. Most likely I’m the problem….

          1. That’s the type of info I was looking for Paul. I don’t, and will probably never have the opportunity to be involved from the beginning to the end. But now having an idea is a great help. Thanks.

    I’m looking forward to the vinyl version of Gabe Mervine’s Say Something. I have the digital recording and the music is amazing! I’m a jazz fan and have never heard of Gabe and am thankful I have now!

      I’m a blind Audiophile.
      The song that I use as a reference track, is 1964.
      Every now and then, I test my own systems with it, for sonic balance.
      If I don’t hear the perfect balance, that’s how I know I have to make some adjustments.

  4. Paul, how does it work then to get a vinyl copy…we all hit your site and try to get one within a few minutes, once you announce the start? Or is there a preorder phase before it’s released?

      You just conjured up images of the Black Friday Walmart free for all that happens almost every year over here. Thanks for the smile. Now ready… get set….

        1. Time Out! Wait a second here. First, I expect $29, the same price Paul sells all his music at. Second, how does Pleasantville, NY ( 30 miles north of NYC ) become closest to Boulder, CO? Where does jazznut live? Alaska, Hawaii?

          1. I know the town where you Live Tony and I also know that with a little effort you can be in Boulder in ~ 2days. leaving 9 hrs / day for sleep and stops… and on the 3rd day music pick-up.
            from what I assume jazz is on the other side of the pond.

            I wouldn’t even guess the price, but I would assume a fair amount more given the manufacturing process, but then again…

      1. No, you should offer a safe buying option for forum members 😉

        As, to be honest, the situation when preorder opens would be the same as when sale opens. The only advantage of presales would be, that you’re safe to sell everything, even before production…or to consider a higher pressing count early enough. But as you can be quite sure to sell everything at a low number of 500 and as you don’t want to repress…a presales helps no one I have to admit (well, I showed up with it).

        So my conclusion is: you should consider a pressing of 1000 and check the validity with a presales option. You don’t have to tell how many you press in advance…unless you want to push sales by limitation (which is considered a less favored approach especially since Craft did so).
