Warm and comfy

In yesterday's post, I wrote about the "problem" of a revealing system.

Great recordings sound amazing while poor recordings can wrinkle the nose.

Would it make sense to reintroduce controls on preamplifiers that warmed the music up without losing details? Engineer and co-conspirator Doug Goldberg has suggested it might be an interesting idea to reintroduce a form of bass and treble modifiers the folks at Quad used to refer to as "Tilt Control."

What's interesting about this approach is that it might address one of the problems of recordings. Mix and mastering engineers who make the final tonal balance decisions on all of our recordings do so by ear. And what they hear is entirely dependent on the loudspeakers and headphones they employ.

And we all know there's no such thing as an uncolored loudspeaker or headphones. So everything we hear has been colored through the lens of studio monitors, which may or may not resemble the highly resolving systems we audiophiles listen to.

I am going to suggest they don't even come close to what you and I consider high-end audio.

Thoughts?
