I ramble on a lot about the sound of live music. But I think perhaps that's not the best way to describe what I am attempting to convey. Perhaps a better term might be musical truth. Musical truth means that a recording and its reproduction are true to the elements that generated the music. That a bassoon sounds like a bassoon regardless of whether it was recorded live on stage or in the confines of a studio. Most of the music I use as a reference isn't recorded from a live performance. Instead, it's captured in a studio. If the recordist has done their job to my standards, then that instrument sounds like itself - it is true to itself. Musical truth. Yes, that's what we're all striving for.
