Dreams of You

The swing’s the thing here,
and Mohney’s music has a propulsive, toe-tapping bounce that evokes the
ballrooms of a bygone era. Songs like “The Octave Stomp", “Show Me What
You Got (and Swing It)”, and “Let Go”, have an irresistible groove
thanks to the infectious singing and playing of Mohney and his fellow
musicians: Conner Hollingsworth on upright bass, Braxton Kahn on drums,
Andrew McNew on trombone and the standout guitar and banjo playing of
Matt Cantor, who provides a rich chordal and rhythmic accompaniment and
inventive soloing. How did a modern-day musician like Jeremy Mohney get
so steeped in the sounds of swing? “I was close to my grandfather and
from a very early age, he played me music like Glenn Miller, Tommy
Dorsey, and Artie Shaw. It just kind of stuck with me,” Mohney noted. “I
was also into the Beatles and Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix. But in the
1920s, people like Louis Armstrong redefined what music could be and
basically made everything that followed possible.”

Artist and Production Credits

The album was recorded by Jay Elliott, produced by Thom LaFond, and mixed by Elliott and LaFond. Giselle Collazo assisted, and Octave Records’ Jessica Carson was the executive producer. The small-group ensemble is captured with clarity and warmth, with each instrument well-defined in an intimate aural space. Dreams of You was recorded mostly “live.” The music was composed in advance but with room for improvisation. “We wrote out the chord charts and memorized the melodies and riffs,” Mohney said. “That’s the way they would have done it back in the day. We wanted to make sure everyone had an idea of what they wanted to do but kept that on-the-spot spirit of improvisation.” Mics EV ND68 – Kick Drum In Audix D4 – Floor Tom Soundelux U195 – Front of Kick Beyerdynamic M201 – Snare EV RE11 – Trombone Alternate 2 EV RE20s – Sax and Trombone - Alternate 2 Coles 4038 - Sax and Trombone - Main Sennheiser 409 – Guitar Cabinet Matched pair Beesneez Lulu FETs – Stereo Drum Overheads and 12th fret acoustic on some tracks Neumann KM84 – Upright Bass Neck ADK Z-MOD Z251 – Acoustic Guitar and Banjo ADK Z-MOD Z67 – Upright Bass Main and Some Lead Vocals ADK Hamburg 67 T-FET - Some Lead Vocals Royer R-121 – Mono Drum Overhead AKG 414 – Mono Room Mic in Omni on some tracks Microphone Preamps: 3 Forssell SMP-2b – Sax, Bass and Acoustic Guitar API 3124 – Bass/Electric Guitar Grace Design M108 - Drums Rupert Neve Designs 5012 – Vocals and Trombone Recording System: Sonoma 32 track DSD recorder with Meitner A/D Converters Trident TSM Console Outboard - Stam Audio SA-2A Compressor – some vocals BAE 73EQL 500 series EQ – Electric guitar cabinet
