When more is better

As a designer it's often difficult to know when to stop.

Do I stop adding power supply capacitors to a design when there's enough to make it work the way I want? Or do I stuff it full until I run out of real estate? More is often better.

How big should the transformer be? Bigger sounds better in every instance I have ever worked with. Do I stop at the end of the budget? When I run out of real estate?

When is it good enough? What can I do to make it better?

These kinds of questions keep me up at night and making the final call always involves a lot of soul searching. Of course I am comfortable with meeting the minimum standards our company has always represented. If it doesn't put a smile on my face when playing music it never leaves the lab.

But, like a good dish you just salted or spiced to perfection, there's a risk of adding too much. Over the top and it doesn't fit or work.

The juggling act involved in design is half the fun.

The other half is feeling great at the end result.
