The best mistakes

Mistakes are underrated teachers.

I’ve learned more about speaker placement from getting it wrong than I ever have from getting it right. You toe a pair of speakers in just a little too far and suddenly Diana Krall sounds like she’s singing from inside a shoebox. Back them out a touch and bam—she's right there in the room with you.

Over the years, from watching others with more experience, from struggling with impossible rooms, and mostly from making mistake after mistake, the lessons I've learned from the best teacher in the world, my errors, has added up to a pretty confident set of internal guidelines that work well.

When things go wrong, we’re forced to listen harder. Pay attention. Learn what changes matter and which ones don’t.

The path to good sound is almost always paved with small, beautiful mistakes.
