Most amplifiers are rated at their maximum power. Most music happens at a tiny fraction of it.
Think about what a typical listening session actually draws. Engaged listening at moderate volume — not background, not party levels, just music you're actually hearing — uses maybe one or two watts from a hundred-watt amplifier. A sudden orchestral crescendo might hit ten watts for a moment. The rest of the time you're living deep in the amplifier's lower range, well below where its headline number means anything.
This matters because amplifiers don't always perform consistently at all output levels. Some designs sound excellent at high power but grain up or harden at low levels, right where most music actually lives. Others are specifically optimized for low-level linearity. Class A operation is the most obvious example — the amplifier stays in its most linear region for a much larger portion of the audio signal, which is why class A designs, like those of our new PMG Series of amplifiers, often sound so natural at moderate listening levels.
Speaker sensitivity changes the math significantly. A high-efficiency speaker — one producing 96 dB from a single watt — requires so little power that you're living even deeper in the first watt, in territory where the quality of the amplifier's lowest-power behavior determines almost everything you hear. Though sensitive speakers like this give up quite a lot of performance for their sensitive nature, but that's fodder for a different post.
The rating on the back of the amplifier tells you its ceiling. What matters to your ears is the floor.
