The most important relationship in a two-channel system isn't between the source and the DAC or the cartridge and the preamp. It's between the amplifier and the speaker.

These two components have to work together physically. A speaker presents an impedance load that varies across the frequency spectrum — sometimes smoothly, sometimes dramatically — and the character of that variation differs significantly between speaker designs. The amplifier has to drive that load cleanly at all frequencies, maintaining control over the woofer cone even where the impedance becomes reactive and difficult.

Some speakers (like our Aspens) are forgiving partners: relatively flat impedance, reasonable sensitivity, comfortable to drive with a wide range of amplifiers. Others are genuinely challenging — dipping to two or three ohms at certain frequencies (Apogees used to dip down to 1/2 an Ohm), presenting reactive loads that can cause lesser amplifiers to lose composure. A powerful amplifier on paper can sound loose and uninvolving with the wrong speaker. A modest amplifier of exceptional quality can sound authoritative and precise with a speaker designed for it.

This is why raw power ratings tell you so little without context. What matters is an amplifier's ability to maintain control as the load becomes difficult — its current delivery, how it behaves when the speaker demands more than voltage alone can supply. An amplifier that can't deliver current loses grip on bass frequencies, and the result is exactly what it sounds like: soft, vague, uncontrolled low end that no amount of room treatment will fix.

The practical implication is worth taking seriously: before upgrading either component, understand what the partnership requires. What does your speaker need from an amplifier? What does your amplifier actually deliver into a real-world load? The specifications are a starting point. Then listen to the two of them together, because a well-matched pair consistently outperforms what either component suggests on its own.
