This drives perfectionists a little crazy because it suggests the gear isn't the whole story. And it isn't. The performance matters. The microphone placement matters. The mood of the session matters in ways that survive the trip to the listening chair decades later.

And here's the point: A high-end system doesn't manufacture emotion. It gets out of the way of what's already there.

Which means when a recording doesn't move you, the question isn't always whether your system is resolving enough. Sometimes the magic simply wasn't there when it was made. No amount of resolution will conjure something that wasn't recorded.

When it is there, you'll know immediately. The hairs go up, the room gets quiet, and you stop whatever else you were doing.

The system's job is to not ruin it.
