Live vs. canned

Terri and I have another live recording to make on the 10th, and it got me thinking.

The goal for a live recording is to capture the event as if the listener were there. To do that we use the world's best recording equipment and techniques to work around the limitations of a space designed not for recording.

On the flip side, when we make a studio recording we also use the same equipment (but different techniques) in a space designed for recording.

The live recording is a battle with an imperfect room—we strive to overcome the live setting—while a studio recording challenges us to make it sound like there should be an audience—we strive to overcome the perfect room.

Two different challenges, each with the same goal of bringing the musicians into your home in a believable setting.
