Harder than it looks

Harder than it looks

Getting great sound takes time. And skill. And work.

You can connect a system and start listening in an afternoon. But that first impression is rarely the final result. High-end gear takes time to settle in. The room needs to be tuned. Components break in, and your own ears adjust as the system takes shape. The deeper levels of performance—the ones that really matter—only come with refinement.

At first, everything might sound impressive. New gear tends to do that. But after a few hours or days, you start to notice what's missing (or if you've chosen wisely, you might be in heaven).

Refinement is about chasing those last few percent—the details that separate good from great. It means nudging speaker positions by half an inch. Swapping cables not for flavor, but for balance. Dialing in toe-in, adjusting gain structure, treating early reflections. These aren’t dramatic moves. They’re subtle shifts that build on each other, layer by layer, until the system locks into place.

And it's not just about the hardware. Your brain needs time to settle, too. What sounds bright on day one might settle into neutral once your ears acclimate. Conversely, a system that seems balanced at first might reveal an upper-mid bump once you've had a few days to live with it.

There’s no shortcut to this part of the process. But there is a reward. The longer you refine, the more natural the system feels. Not just accurate, but right.

That’s when listening becomes effortless—and music takes over.
