Hard to ignore

We spend so much time picking the right speakers, the right amp, the perfect DAC or turntable. And then we drop it all into a room that doesn’t care what we paid. The truth is, your room is the biggest component in your system—and often the least understood.

When something sounds off—bloated bass, a flat soundstage, smeared imaging—it’s tempting to blame the gear. But more often than not, it’s the room talking back.

Rooms have modes. These are standing waves that form between walls, floor, and ceiling—especially in the bass. They don’t ask your permission. They just happen. Put a speaker near a wall, and you might get a 10 dB bump at 60Hz. Shift your chair a foot forward, and suddenly the bass disappears. It’s not the speaker’s fault. It’s physics.

High frequencies misbehave too, bouncing off hard surfaces like drywall, glass, and wood. Early reflections—those first few bounces off side walls or the ceiling—arrive at your ears just milliseconds after the direct sound. That’s enough to smear detail and shrink the image. You’re no longer hearing what the speaker is doing. You’re hearing what the room is adding.

It’s one reason I always recommend treating your setup space with the same care you give your gear choices. Not with foam glued to every wall, but with intention. A diffuser here. An absorber there. Curtains, rugs, even a well-placed bookcase can make a meaningful difference. The goal isn’t to deaden the room—it’s to quiet the chaos.

And then there’s placement.

Most speakers don’t want to be near the walls. They want to breathe. But here’s the problem: the spot where they image best usually isn’t the spot where they produce the best bass. That’s why we use subwoofers—to separate those two jobs. Let the mains go where they can disappear and throw a big, open stage. Let the subs handle the room’s pressure zones.

Now, it’s easy to say things like “put the speakers out from the walls and find the perfect triangle.” And yes, great ideas matter. But if we’re being honest, most of us need more than ideas—we need a path. A clear, step-by-step guide to get from “it sounds off” to “it sounds right.” That’s exactly why I wrote The Audiophile’s Guide and created the companion setup tracks. If you haven’t gone through it yet, head over to www.theaudiophilesguide.com. It’ll walk you through everything—from speaker placement to imaging and depth—in a way that actually works.

Because once you tame the room, even a good system becomes a great one. And you stop thinking about gear and walls and modes—and start hearing just the music. Which, in the end, is the whole point.
