Giving a hoot

A well-set-up stereo playing a great recording can do something remarkable: make the speakers disappear.

The room fills with music from a stage that seems to float between and behind the speakers (something that has always fascinated me). The vocalist stands in the center. The piano stretches into the left. You forget there are two boxes sitting in front of you.

But then that illusion can vanish in an instant if the recording engineer hard pans a close miked instrument or voice.

Here's why that happens. Your brain locates sound in space using two cues: the difference in arrival time between your ears, and the difference in level. In a real room, sounds bounce off walls and reach you from multiple angles, and your brain uses all of that information to build a three-dimensional picture. A stereo recording simulates this convincingly — but only for sounds that exist in both channels with carefully managed timing and level relationships.

When a sound is hard-panned to one channel with nothing in the other, those spatial cues collapse. There's no timing relationship to decode, no inter-channel information for your brain to work with. The signal comes from one speaker and your auditory system correctly identifies it as exactly that: a speaker.

The illusion breaks because the illusion depends on both channels working together.

Hard panning and close miking are two no-nos for engineers that give a hoot.

Your brain never forgets.
