Are there any bad stereos?

Prev Next

Ever notice how good everything sounds today? Even the damn mobile phones have good sounding DACs in them.

It occurs to me that the overall state of music reproduction equipment has crept slowly upwards in quality over the years. And I cannot think of a recent bad sounding piece of equipment I have heard at any price. But it didn't used to be that way.

When we started PS Audio in the early 1970's there were plenty of dreadful sounding products. Battling them in the marketplace was easy. All we had to do was build honest equipment we had paid attention to and the crappy sounding pieces fell by the wayside, decaying in the dust of time. But not so anymore.

I read somewhere that even the cheapest cell phone has a magnitude more computing power than those of the Space Shuttle. And in that same vein today's lowest-of-the-low no doubt sounds significantly better that music reproduction equipment of some decades past.

It's a good thing when the tide rises high enough that all boats float.
