    Paul is correct about the iPad having a DAC built in to it.
    If it didn't, then it wouldn't be able to play music or any kind of sounds out loud via their built in speakers.
    It doesn't matter if it's an apple product, or a product made by LG or some other company.
    Cellphones and tablets work on the same basic principle.
    In order to get sound out of them, you'll need to convert that digital signal in to an analog signal.
    But you can't do that without a DAC.
    This is why all moble devices have DAC chips built in to them.
    But a DAC for a hifi system, has many chips in it that are performing a different function.
    You have some that are taking the signal and putting it threw a clock, then you have some that are cleaning up the bit streams.
    And the last few sets of chips, are taking the digital signal and converting it in to analog signals.
    And that's how you get sound from digital!
