JJ Murphy’s Sleep Paralysis is a genre-bending odyssey through the American musical landscape. Blending blues, jazz, fusion, and Americana, the album showcases intricate, expressive musicianship shaped by Murphy’s unmistakably melodic writing.

A powerhouse ensemble brings these compositions to life: Braxton Kahn on drums, Wyatt Walker Wear on bass, Tom Amend on keys and horns, and JJ Murphy leading on acoustic and electric guitar. Together, the band navigates the line between structure and improvisation, with each piece evolving from a clear statement into a dynamic conversation. Performances move seamlessly from intricate solo passages to deep-in-the-pocket grooves, all propelled by the clarity and purpose of Murphy’s compositional voice.

Recorded in high-resolution DSD by Octave Records, Sleep Paralysis offers the interplay and sophistication of jazz and fusion alongside the emotional accessibility of folk and rock ’n’ roll. It’s an album for anyone drawn to deeply communicative musicianship—captured with such intimacy and precision that you feel as if you’re part of the conversation.
