The scarcity argument
Everyone's doing it is a crossroad argument. Some of us embrace the popular while others run as quickly as possible. The same can be said for scarcity: some shy away while others are drawn like moths to the flame. For me, the fact that a technology has yet to be tried is more appealing than the accepted norm. If everyone's using op-amps in their designs my first question is why—because everyone else is doing it or because it's better? Often, I find others following the more traveled road because it's a smoother ride without challenging potholes. I would argue that the less traveled path offers the best chance for innovative breakthroughs. That following the same highway is safest but almost always mundane. If you seek the extraordinary, the few who aren't doing what everyone else does is probably your best bellwether.
