The gatekeeper

While we’re on the subject of preamplifiers, let’s take a moment to consider the new PMG Signature Preamplifier—a revolution in preamp design.

We’ve been building preamps for a long time. In fact, it was a humble phono preamp that got PS Audio off the ground more than 50 years ago. Back then, we were just trying to get clean, musical sound from vinyl without draining our wallets. Today, we’re still after the same thing—only now the tools, the expectations, and the possibilities are on a whole other level.

Preamps are deceptively simple. At first glance, they’re just middlemen: a little volume control, a few switches, and a signal pass-through to the power amp. But in truth, a preamp is the gatekeeper of the entire system. Everything flows through it. Every source, every nuance, every drop of dynamic information has to pass through this one component before it’s handed off to the heavy lifters downstream.

And we know, from years of building great systems, that a properly designed preamplifier adds to the system's magic. Regardless of the source, a great preamp enhances the music in ways that are hard to describe but obvious when you hear it.

And here’s the secret that took us decades to truly appreciate: it’s the power supply feeding the delicate audio circuits that makes the magic. Get that wrong, and it doesn’t matter how perfect everything else is.

We’ll continue this discussion tomorrow.
