My electric car has no oil to leak onto the garage floor, yet each and every morning I take a peek under the car just to make sure.
It's an old habit and it's one I am alright not killing. Why? Because it doesn't get in my way and perhaps an ounce of caution is worth a pound of cure.
Cliches aside, I find that if I want to put the energy into a fundamental behavioral change it's best to choose one that is blocking forward progress. That list is long enough as it is and I certainly don't need more to work on.
Why put energy into erasing unnecessary habits?
When we fly I always notice the pilots going through their checklist. They must have done the same list a thousand times, and yet…
As a creature of habit, I always make sure the system is on and properly set before I listen critically. The small pieces of tape marking the seating position in our reference room deserve a glance. Is the subwoofer on at the rear of the room?
There's plenty in my life deserving of change and I work on that list daily.
But the tried and true, relevant or not, bring me peace of mind.
And that's worth a lot.
