Which component is more important?

  1. Get out the measuring tape. Should really set up your speakers according to what the manufacturer recommends first and if your room isn’t cooperating than make the adjustments you need to compensate for the room. If you need to get closer to the back wall to improve bass and tonal balance do that but stay at least 2 feet from the sidewalls and no room treatments. They are not needed.

    1. They are in my room…but that’s because I’ve lined my two side walls with my CD collection. A bad idea in practice due to reflections off a couple thousand hard reflective CD spines. Once they are out, I’ll be using GIK panels at first and second reflection points.

On a separate note, I don’t see the new speaker setup book on P S Audio’s website anywhere.

  2. I recently received a copy of The Loudspeaker from Amazon. Many references to the tracks on the cd. Do not see it listed on the PSA site. When will it be available?

      1. Paul, thank you very much for the time and effort that you expend dealing with our little community. I have the new FR-30s ,a set of the M-1200s and the gaincell DAC. I also have the Perfect Wave SACD transport. I have spent several hours with the setup manual and the disc and moved the speakers so much my pecs ache. I get the excellent center channel and presence and sound stage behind the speakers and it sounds absolutely fantastic, but no sound stage beyond the speakers right and left. I had thought that the problem was the fact that the right sidewall was 21 feet away(open basement, equipment and speakers against the stair well wall) and the left sidewall was 8 1/2 feet away (covered over completely with bookcases filled with books). Now I hear that maybe the gaincell DAC could be contributing to the problem. The long term plans are to upgrade to the BHK pre-amp and standalone
DAC but my wife ever so gently asked if I was done for awhile. I had to respond in the positive because she has been so understanding of my totally out -of -blue desire to radically upgrade the audio system . Thank you once again for your time and consideration.

        1. Hi Dennis. The lack of extension beyond the speakers can be caused by a number of factors including the preamp (you should upgrade when you can). But, I think we can maybe help in the meantime.

The sources of this problem can be from too much toe-in. Make sure your left and right FR30s are not toed in more than a degree or two.

Also, the room. Do you have any diffusion on the front wall?

  3. Very good advise how many systems I’ve seen with big money and in rooms and setup that in no way will bring out the money spent to equal the sound the system is capable off. The units look like new power regenorators? If so it is good to see the AC IEC has been moved away from the AC inlets. My P12 really hindered what power cords I could use due to the AC and the 1st AC input being so close together.
