Density of sound = A Forrest of Details
I concur Mr. McGowan.
I had floorstanders for nigh on 38 years & then I thought I’d try a pair of standmounters (bookshelves) & after persisting with them for 10 months…errr…nope.
So then I added a pair of subwoofers, but the 5″ mid/bass drivers in the two way standmounter shoeboxes still had to work way too hard when I wanted to listen to some funky EDM at realistic listening levels (dB’s)…so…errr…still nope.
Yup, I’m back to 3-way floorstaders…lesson learned (better late than never) 😉
But shouldn’t subwoofers be placed where the room modes are tamed best while the woofer/tweeter combo should be positioned for best imaging and soundstage? And there are stand-mount active (!) speakers (Kii Three, Grimm Audio – not to mention Devialet Phantoms, etc) which go as deep in frequency as many big passive subwoofers.
What brand of sub was it? Did the crossover have a high pass filter to limit how low the bookshelf went? If it did your bookshelf should be over taxed unless the crossover point was so low the high pass was near the low end of the bookshelf.
