What's the definition of a prefect speaker?

  1. Beyond the acoustic reproduction quality of the speaker, which is surely of extreme importance , there must be serious concerns as to the longevity of materials and workmanship as well. If a speaker sounds glorious for the first few years of ownership, but compliance , voice coils, crossover and cabinet structure begin to degrade due to material failures then that speaker would lose a lot of appeal for most buyers. And with most degradation , it is a slow gradual process which is far less noticeable than an immediate catastrophic failure. We already have to deal with this if you are a vinyl person. Stylii wear pretty fast especially if you track for pure performance and not long wear. I have been torn for years about tracking at max 1.4 grams for wear of records and stylus, but many setups sound so much better at 2 grams, mine included, so I use higher settings. And tubes wear also ever so slowly which can be offset a little by bias adjustment, but it is an expected phenomena in both cases. But my speakers need to be as rock stable as possible and for the full length of ownership. Due to stupidity on my part, I have had to re-cone one woofer and 2 sets of voice coils over 47 years of owning my Altec VOTT's but other than a little smoothing of the bass perhaps, they have been just wonderful. As an example, a good friend bought some Bose 901's in 1971 around the same time I bought my Altecs. His speakers are long forgotten and discarded due to material failure decades ago. Pioneer R 700's were another from the same time, long gone. So if your investment value is also important, the perfect speaker should also be durable. And I am so sentimental about the old Altecs, even if I buy something new, I will never get rid of them. Far from perfect acoustically, they still give goose bumps playing the old favorite tunes and performances. Although I often make jokes about being able to climb into the cabinets in the event of a tornado alert since they are structurally massive and well built. my 3 pairs take up considerable room in my 980 sq' house. And yes Paul, I too have been married 42 years this year and my wife has been ultra tolerant of the monsters in the living room.
