We have the Direct Stream DAC and BHK signature Preamp. We are still testing the Preamp. We first tried setting the DAC's volume at 100 and controlling the total volume from the Preamp. We did not like it. Then, set the DAC's volume at 75 and controlled the total volume from the Preamp. It sounded much, much better. Why? Would you recommend, as you said in your comment, to set the Preamp at 100, and control the total volume from the DAC?

Every system and synergy of that system are different. There;'s going to be a difference in sound quality either way so do what works best. In my system I keep the DAC at 100 and then control it from the BHK preamp. I haven't experimented a terrible lot the other way, to be honest, but if it works then go for it. There are no set rules to this.
