Stellar M1200 Mono Amplifier

1200 watt vacuum tube input power amplifier pair

Built in Boulder

“…what these amps did so well was so much damn fun and what they didn’t do so well had to be tracked down with a sonic microscope.” Michael Fremer.

Stellar M1200 Power Amplifier

Product Description

“This amplifier is not a giant killer. It is the giant―an ultra-wideband, dynamic, linear, uncolored, three-dimensional giant.” Stu McCreary Positive Feedback Magazine

The M1200 began as the dream project of PS engineer, Darren Myers who wanted to build a power amplifier without bounds or compression on even the loudest of musical passages, yet equally at home reproducing the subtlest of details.

To preserve both uncompressed dynamics as well as the tiniest of nuanced details requires a cost-no-object input stage, like that of a high-performance vacuum tube fed from its own analog power supply. The amp’s delicate input signals, now faithfully preserved by its vacuum tube input, then need to be amplified without restriction by taking advantage of a new type of Class D output power module. This extraordinarily high current, low distortion, MOSFET output stage combines state-of-the-art topologies with decades of design and listening experience to produce what we believe is the most musically satisfying amplifier of its kind.

The over-the-top high power output of the M1200 exists not to match a small handful of power-hungry speakers, but rather, to act as the perfect uncompressed power source for even the smallest, most efficient of speakers on the market.

Remember, power amplifiers deliver only the number of watts required by your speaker to achieve the desired loudness. Even the most powerful amplifiers deliver only what’s asked of them. What’s been missing in most amplifiers is adequate headroom and effortless linear performance—something only a vacuum tube-based powerhouse like the M1200 can unquestionably provide. From the most subtle of details to unheard of explosive dynamics, Stellar M1200 represents the pinnacle of high powered musicality that must be heard to be believed. Regardless of the power demands—or power limitations—of your loudspeakers, Stellar M1200 is the perfect choice if effortless musicality is in your future.

Stereophile Magazine

The M1200's ability to couple with, control, and drive the woofers of my Wilson Alexx loudspeakers matched that of any amplifier I've had here, including my reference darTZeel NHB-468 and Boulder's 2150, both of which are way more costly.

Positive Feedback

This amplifier is not a giant killer. It is the giant―an ultra wide band, dynamic, linear, uncolored, three dimensional giant.

Words like "transparency" and expressions like, "a clean window," "veils lifted," and "spooky real" just won't cut it for this one. So as I struggle to expound upon the un-expoundable, I'm just going to use a word that is simple and commonplace to describe the performance of this very uncommon amplifier: realism. I'm in pursuit of realism in my listening room. I won't be satisfied until my sessions are like stepping into a Holodeck of the Star Trek variety. I want to be "there" for the performance and forget all about my room and the gear. This is exactly what this stellar amplifier does for me. It effortlessly transports me to the venue with its wide band, dynamic, linear, uncolored, three dimensional realism.

I don’t know of an amp I have had more fun with

The Audio Beatnick

I don’t know of an amp I have had more fun with or one that has put a smile on my face as many times as the Stellar M1200s did. When I take off my audiophile reviewer hat and sit down and crank up the music, they succeed in providing hours of pleasure. I normally keep 2 or 3 amps around to rotate in my systems, and you can be sure the M1200s will continue to be there.

While I can’t say everyone should run out and buy the M1200s, I will say that everyone should hear them. While there are no perfect amps, this could be your perfect amp. PS Audio’s generous trial program makes it possible for you to determine that. You will be a better listener for the experience, and I suspect many of you will not return them.

Great amplifiers!

Stereo Times

Effortless. Detailed. Dynamic. Powerful. Articulate. Clean. Controlled. Musical. Fun. The PS Audio Stellar M1200 Power Amplifiers are more than just good "Class D" amplifiers; they are great amplifiers regardless of the technology employed.

Best of both worlds

HiFi News UK

The latter track positively erupted, the amplifiers creating a searing midband with Matt Heafy’s sinewy guitar tone brought to the fore, and drums again hitting with the speed and aggression of a champion boxer.

Best sounding amps

The M1200s are the best sounding amps I’ve ever had in my system. They check off every box I can think of. Detail, clarity, punch, fun, huge soundstage, musicality, precision, body, smooth yet edgy when the recording calls for it, engaging (did I mention I got lost in the music more than once?), and oh yeah, fun. Even 70’s rock sounds good. Are they better then the M700s? By a lot. Are they worth double the price? I can’t answer that for anybody else but me. To me they are.

In a different league

I had planned on doing some extensive A-B testing, but it quickly became painfully obvious even with only a couple of hours warm up that the M1200s are indeed in a different league and that what I was doing was wasting my time. The M1200s just blow me away. More clarity in the mids, better sound stage, heftier bass. They are keepers. Kudos to Darren and the entire team.

Bettered in every way

Bottom line, the M1200’s have bettered the Wolcott’s in every category. Timbral Accuracy. Dynamics (both micro and macro). Bass (both weight and texture). Imaging. Soundstaging. Inner detail and ambience retrieval. What’s left? Oh yeah, pace… they have ebb and flow that pulls you in and won’t let go. Toe tapping, head nodding rhythmic drive. Exciting.

These are keepers!

It has been a immense pleasure to have the M1200s in my system. There have been many many times where I stop working and turn around and just listen because of how engaging these amps are. My initial impressions that these amps are “effortless” and have “increased depth and separation” on my system still hold true and have only increased. Holographic, smooth, revealing, punch and neutral tone.I can’t help but feel I leveled up multiple times in one purchase. Keepers for sure!

Talk about resolution!

Why is this incredible improvement to my system happening?
Is it the Tubes?
The huge increase is wattage (increasing headroom)?
Whatever is inside causing the weight to double that of the M700s?

BEATS ME!!! I’ll leave the explanations to the engineers. But about this I’m 100% sure – the M1200s significantly upped the overall performance of my humble system more so than any of the dozens of tweaks and upgrades I’ve made to various systems over the years. Thank you PS Audio and my new electrical engineering Guru, Darren Myers. The down side of all this, however, is that now I’ll have to give serious consideration to Darren’s phono preamp – damn, this hobby never lets me just stay satisfied with what I’ve got.

“Effortless” and “A lot of meat on this bone”

David W.

I couldn’t help myself, I had to listen rather than wait for them to settle in. And boy, am I glad I did even at this early stage. As I went through my various playlists in Roon, popped a few CDs, and a vinyl or two I found myself being impressed with the sound. If I had to pick a few words to describe what I was experiencing “Effortless” and “A lot of meat on this bone” and “Increased depth and separation” kept coming back to me. I found myself sitting there for several hours more than what I had initially planned on. I believe we are off to a fantastic start! Will post more soon.

Drawn into the music

After a mere 12 hours of overnight burn in via streaming SOMA FM’s Groove Salad channel at normal listening volume, and volume matching pink noise within 1 dB of my current rig, I began serious listening.

The first telling thing I can say is that despite my analytical intentions of writing detailed notes, I instead found myself immediately drawn into the music. I put the pen down and was struck by the involved and yet relaxed presentation. It was pressing all my buttons. Timbres and harmonic structures were accurate and balanced. Dynamic. Excellent imaging and deep wide soundstage. Deep textured bass. Excellent inner detail and ambience recovery and decay without exaggeration. Overall impression is incredibly smoooth and enjoyable. But don’t interpret this comment to mean that these amps are boring or that they lack excitement. They easily made Frank Sinatra’s 1952 “Only The Lonely” ballads sound powerful, full of life, and emotionally gripping. Bravo! So, more about the music.
