What makes music sound live?

We know live music from afar without seeing the musicians play, and we can almost always tell if the sound is reproduced, but why? What makes live music sound live and reproduced not?

  1. I have started a research paper on this. I am not writing from the engineer’s perspective, though. My academic background is in music theory and composition. I believe this issue lays within the overtone series. But “where” in the overtone series is the secret for violins, for example? I can tell you it’s not at the fundamental. 🙂
