Cohen understands it as do many talented songwriters like my son Sean who is in the middle of writing his most ambitious project yet, a musical of Homer's Iliad. I suppose the mechanics of "The fourth, the fifth, the minor fall and the major lift" can be learned, but it may never penetrate my meager brain to fathom how this universal language speaks to us all. We speak music by letting the notes touch our souls and become one.
