Summer activities

Terri and I always enjoy summers in Colorado. To be honest, I can’t think of anywhere I’d rather be.

The evenings are warm enough the crickets sing their songs, yet cooling down so you can sleep after 10 P.M..

On the weekends we hike; our last at Lake Isabelle in the Indian Peaks Wilderness and the week before, a glacier in the same area. You start most hikes in shorts and T-shirt. Once you get to 12,000 feet you’ve added a light jacket and leggings to stay warm. Boulder’s only a 45 minute drive from the trailhead, so after hiking we have lunch back in town, wearing shorts again. It’s great.

Also this summer I’ve had several wonderful projects afoot: the designer of the Infinity IRSV loudspeaker system in Music Room One, Arnie Nudell, came by for the day and re-positioned and tuned up the system such that it sounds, well, unbelievably better. Arnie’s a true master at setup and you can read more about that day here. If you’ve had the chance to hear the IRS at our offices, it’s worth another visit; so much better the system is.

You’d think I was busy enough but frankly I find it hard to keep my mind fully occupied so I started another project: I am writing a novel (isn’t everyone?). It’s a rip-snorting thriller, with a really interesting concept for the theme, titled “Discovery”. I hope folks will get a kick out of reading it. It’s certainly been a kick to write it!

Lastly, a quick power amplifier update. Legendary designer Bascom King and our own Bob Stadtherr have been working together to finish what I trust will be the final version of the new PS Audio Reference Power Amplifier and, surprise, surprise, it will have one of those funny glowing fire bottles called a vacuum tube in its front end!! Chuck Lamb

One last and very special summer event we attended was a home concert for jazz pianist Chuck Lamb. Our good friends Robert and Padma invited us to this very special event in Lyons Colorado, one of the towns hardest hit by last summer’s floods.

Chuck has taken the place of legendary pianist Dave Brubeck, playing with his two sons in concerts all over the world. Terri and I had front row seats, sitting in a friend’s basement, listening with the greatest pleasure to a fine evening’s worth of jazz. I published an article on it here and shot a short video of the event on my phone and posted it here so you can enjoy what we heard. Note just how close we really are. Have fun!

Sprout Kickstarter campaign ends successfully

Thank you to everyone that participated in our Sprout launch campaign on Kickstarter. It was an amazing success. We managed to get 897 backers for this great new product idea from our son, Scott McGowan. Because of the success of the campaign, Sprout will ship in October as promised.

Scott also announced a stretch goal to include a custom designed matching power cable if the campaign reached $425K. Unfortunately, it fell a mere $10K short. After talking it through, we all decided “what the heck” and everyone that ordered a Sprout on the campaign will get the custom power cord anyway. Just our way of saying ‘thanks for the support’.

Save $1000 on a new P10 Power Plant

There’s certainly no better way to improve the sound of your system than perfecting its AC power; and the very best way to do that is with a Power Plant AC Regenerator; the P10 in particular.

And now there’s a limited number of P10’s for a short period of time available at $1,000 off the retail price. This offer is available around the world. Just ask your dealer, distributor or you can contact us directly for their names. You can also just click here and grab one off the website while they’re still in stock if you live in the United States. This won’t last long, take one home and try it while you still can.

New review for DirectStream DAC

After listening to the PS Audio PerfectWave DirectStream DAC for the past few months it is my opinion that DirectStream represents a new benchmark in audio reproduction. Notice that I didn’t say “digital audio reproduction.” In other words, in my view the PS Audio DirectStream is the most musically and technically capable device of any type that I’ve ever had the pleasure to evaluate. My heartfelt congratulations go out to Paul McGowan, Ted Smith, and PS Audio’s excellent design team for making DirectStream a reality for those of us who truly love our music.”

Wow!! This is but just part of a great review in Stereo Times magazine. You can read the entire review right here.

News flash!

We have both DirectStream Kits and units finally back in stock, so if you really want to hear what your music collection truly sound like, go here if you’re in the United States, or call your dealer or distributor and get cooking!

Short takes and series finals

Our resident Musicologist Lawrence Schenbeck gives us some great recommendations this month, from Bach, Corelli, Rossini, Shostakovich, Berg, Bruckner, Scarlatti, and Bernstein to name a few.

If you’re a classical music fan head here to read the article, hear the samples and find out some of the best recordings to buy this year. It’s a great article presenting equally great music.

Chuck Loeb

There are very few people that I know that are even aware of Chuck Loeb. The few that do think he is a new guitarist on the jazz scene. In fact, his career spans over four decades and he is a Grammy nominated guitarist, composer and producer.

In fact, he has composed over 250 published songs, network TV show themes and scores, produced over thirty world-renowned recording artists and is an in-demand clinician and educator.

Jazz writer Keith Copeland shares with us the guitar stylings of Chuck Loeb. You can click here to enjoy.

Until August

August has some great news I can’t share with you just yet, but it should be pretty obvious when you see it. I’ll certainly send another newsletter out to tell you about it. Don’t forget to save on a P10, DirectStreams are in stock, both the kits and the units.

Have fun and see you next month!

Paul McGowan
