Smooth jazz………the term paints a picture of cool music that is very easy on the ears and soothing to the mind. Some consider it a genre while others consider it a radio format. Whatever side you’re on, smooth jazz is derived from the long standing genres of jazz, r&b, funk, rock and pop and usually has a subdued tempo, is mellow and has a layering lead instrument that is primarily sax, guitar or vocals. In contrast to a genre such as fusion, the sound is neither challenging nor obtrusive. There are many artists that consider smooth jazz to be home and one such musician is Gregg Karukas.
Keyboardist Karukas fulfilled a childhood fantasy of touching people with music. He spent his early years in close proximity to the jukebox in his father’s roadside tavern in Bowie, MD soaking up 60’s hit music, including the Beatles and Herbie Hancock. “I was inspired by the idea that you can touch people’s emotions with melodic songs and lyrics that meant something.” According to Gregg, “My favorite musical term is “Composer”. Coming up, my role models were the great keyboardists/composers: Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, Chick Corea, Carole King, Leon Russell, Joni Mitchell, Joe Zawinul, and the recently departed George Duke.”
Instead of delving deep into the biography of Gregg Karukas, let’s allow his music to touch the inner depths of our soul.
There are times when the hustle and bustle of every day life can lead to tension, stress and really bad moods. The remedy? Relax….slip into something comfortable…..and let something comfortable slip into you……imbibe the smooooooooth sounds of Gregg Karukas….ahhhhhhhhh.
WISHING YOU AND YOUR FAMILIES A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A MOST PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR!!!
