Using stereo speakers for movies

  1. Glad I’m not alone in this camp. The stellar gain cell has a pair of balanced inputs, connect them to a Essence HDACC II-4K and you can do your wife a pleasure by ditching the big ugly AV receiver that has become completely obsolete for what you are looking for. That way all of your resources sound stellar, ie. high end. Last year I did ask PS Audio if they would consider a Stellar line multi format (CD, SACD, BD4K) player with I2S stereo out. Also that unit should offer the digital inputs the Gain Cell DAC does not provide. Ethernet and multiple HDMI with video through to HDMI ARC and the stereo audio to I2S output to let the Gain Cell do its magnificent work. That would be stellar to all of us, as everything would come in the elegant Stellar enclosures which look less dominant than a big bulky receiver and that sound high end. It would please your interior design, ie your wife, your options to play from any source you want and last but not least your ears. Once in a while I will just keep bugging PS Audio about this 😉

  2. I have been doing that since the 1970's with stereo VCR tapes. It is still a fine way to do it and pretty much necessary since most HDTV's these days have small bezels and the speakers in them are poor at best. That is why the sound bar business is booming, sadly.

  3. Paraphrasing- “Pick your speakers based on music and you will always be happy with how your movies sound, not necessarily the other way around as you might be very disappointed”- that says it all and I have always believed that to be 100% accurate.
The only thing I would add to this is if you really like to play your movies at extreme volumes you do want to make sure that not only your speakers but also your subwoofer(s) are up to the task as some of the movies being released these days can give all the above a little greater challenge than most of the music some of us listen to.
