  1. A few days ago, I pulled my speakers from my (too) small room into a larger one just as an experiment to see how they’d sound with some space. The answer is pretty good. I suspect that in addition to the larger space, the fact that the big room has a tray ceiling may have something to do with it. Alas, everything has to go back where it was.

  2. It may have been a few years ago that I first heard about this idea. I can’t remember the source. It may have been from a previous ‘Ask Paul’ or “Paul’s Post” but I’ve designed the idea into my planned new house. I decided to go for a single, large, 5ΒΊ skillion roof with the inside ceiling following its contour in order to maximize ceiling height. I’ve oriented a 6m (19′) X 4.8m (16′), open-plan ‘living’ area so that the speakers will be firing at 90ΒΊ to the slope, as Paul suggested. A standard ceiling cavity will extend into the rest of the house from above the rear wall (behind the listener). My builder suggested using louvred panelling instead of a flat wall to cover the ceiling cavity in order to provide further sonic diffusion.

Since the budget doesn’t allow for a dedicated hi-fi room, I’ve had to compromise with asymmetry on the side walls, one side being an external wall, the other opening out to the kitchen/dining area. However, I’ve tried to compensate for that by allowing for a short run of wall (in the form of a pantry πŸ˜‰ ) on the open side, near the ‘front’ wall (behind the speakers), in an attempt to balance the corner effects of the continuous wall on the other side.

I’m very much looking forward to using Paul’s guide and CD to tune in the room once I’ve moved in. Fingers crossed that I’ve planned well enough to finish up with a half-decent listening space. πŸ˜‰
