JRiver is god awful…. don’t even go near it if you’re new to music server. I use Audirvana 3 (best) and Roon. Rip all your files to AIFF (best) or WAV.
I followed your music server idea some six months ago and highly recommend it.
I’m running the server into the DAC / pre amp of my Audiolab cdq 8200 and the results are far superior than using the cdq to play cd’s.
A DAC upgrade will be next but Directstream is a bit out of my price range at the moment – would Stellar be an upgrade?
I couldn’t get past JRiver’s UI so I tried a few other solutions ending on Roon. Because we’ve had free or low cost solutions for a very long time, Roon’s pricing is tough to swallow but I think pays off. I wish it were half the price but I think it would be difficult to revert to another solution at this point.
The audio quality of Audirvana 3 is superior to all others I’ve tried. It’s UI is a bit awkward, but ok. I like that it interfaces with my TIDAL account and, of course, my local files. I run it on a MacBook Air via USB or BT AptX to a Benchmark DAC2 HGC.
