Nope…only maybe around 70% of CD players can act as a transport.
Great Paul I wondered about just buying your DAC and hooking my Marantz SA-10 up to it and using it as a transport, but I am not sure if I really hear a better sound/ or just a different sound. The transport in my player is just superb and with its design it needs no upsampling at all direct music master design they call it. Paul or anyone any thoughts on this?
Interestingly PS Audio use the exact same CD drive mechanism in their transport
as the one in your Marantz SA-10…the all metal SACD-M3 transport mechanism.
Every cd player normally has a built-in DAC. So I think it depends on the available connections… For someone with skills it would be possible to adapt a player for an external DAC. There are a few very good players that deserve a better DAC.
Get to the basement I hear a tornado warning! GET the IRS down there also before the storm
Unfortunately Naim make only one CD player now and it has no digital output so no upgrade path.
My old (1985) ADS CD3 did not have a digital output.
However, it did have dual D/A chips, up-sampling and very good analog filters.
At $895 in its day ($100 for optional remote),it was as good as anything costing much more…
It was a 4th generation player, and, other than a Sony-sourced laser assembly, it was pure ADS (Braun in Germany)
There was still a lot of snake oil in CD marketing in those days.
I got a distributor deal back then for $300 including remote.
Short of a rubber square belt d(rawer slider, it still works and sounds great.
Replaced with a Marantz SACD30n.
I sold the hell out of ADS back then, and had a car system of ADS speakers and amps.
I was surprised when I checked the back of my Sony’s 4-733695-01 had only digital and HDMI output. No RCA. I did not need it at first then I tried io connect to my Audio input which is very old, and does not have any input other than std. RCA. BUMMER! Love you Paul keep them coming.
There are many CD players that do not have a digital output. I have a few of those myself.
Hi Paul, just to let you know, I have 3 older CD players in my family room ( 1 JVC and 2 Sony) that only have RCA analoge output with absolutely no digital outputs. There is no way that I know to get them thru a dac, unless you run the signal thru an adc first and I’m not sure they exist for the consumer. My other 3 carousel cdp’s have digital outputs that connects to my holo Spring 3 dac.
PS. Thanks for all you do.
