Audiophile surge protectors
Subscribe to Ask Paul Ask a QuestionIt can be important to protect your audio system from surges and spikes but in so doing, we can often make worse the way they sound. How to get an audiophile surge protector without spending a lot of money.
I just unplug my multi outlet strip when the HiFi is not in use
Nothing worse than a surging audiophile!
I have used the Brickwall surge protector for many years. https://www.brickwall.com/pages/the-worlds-best-surge-protectors It does not use MOVs. It’s website explains why MOVs are not a good solution to electrical surges because frequent minor surges that commonly occur wear out the MOVs until they are non functional. I once discussed this with PS Audio. The tech rep said that the Brickwall surge protector would degrade the sound. So for a while I took it out of my system. I could detect no difference in sound. With or without it sounds identical and equally great. So I put the Brickwall back in my system. The price is under $200 and, I think, well worth it.
Does a power conditioner then plug into the wall outlet surge protector?
SurgeX, Brickwall all use Zerosurge.com technology.
Hey Paul, I’m wondering if your PS Audio regenerators also act as surge protectors?
You bet it does!
Dectet “3 or 4 hundred dollars…”? I wish.
$749 – https://www.psaudio.com/products/dectet-power-center/
To my knowledge AC Conditioners/Surge Protectors by Furman Co. had been known and well liked by audiophiles for being least intrusive and altering the sound of hifi stereo systems for decades. I own one myself, and it’s been good for my system for a very long time. It’s not cheap, about $750 – $800, but much less then even the least expensive PSA Power Plant. Off course if you want the optimal not just a protection alone, but IMPROVEMENT/UPGRADE to your system, nothing beats the PSA Power Plant, even the least expensive one. Just ask Paul, or any experienced audiophile.
I myself have been saving for a while to get one.
Cheers!
I found this one at Quest For Sound for a little over $500.00.
