About Charles Rodrigues
Charles Rodrigues was botn in Massachusetts of Portuguese descent. After World War II he studied cartooning at the Cartoonist's and Illustrator's School (now the School of Visual Arts in NYC) under the GI Bill. Rodrigues contributed cartoons to HiFi Review (later Stereo Review) starting in 1958. He also contributed to many magazines including The Realist and National Lampoon. rodrigues died in 2004.
Perfect opportunity. In the illustration above, one should note that life will be short on this island no food, no water. Which makes me think that cliche originally began life as deserted island.
I once read that the term “desert island” was a mistranslation from the French in Jules Verne’s “Mysterious Island”—- the term was “deserted island.” Dunno if it’s true, but it’s a good story .
Kinda similar to I could care less, mistakenly evolved from I could not care less, geddit?
In my mind’s eye, just out of picture to the left at paddling distance, is a mainland with an abundance of fruit and livestock, populated by luscious, eager to please, dusky maidens with excellent hunting and culinary skills. I think the guys are just on that miserable outcrop because occasionally you need to get away from it all.
