Voltages, typically on the AC power line, that do not remain steady.

With respect to AC power, our expectations are that we receive a steady source of AC power in our homes.  In fact, we do not.  A typical home AC line voltage fluctuates rather routinely in most homes.

In North America and other parts of the world, the standard voltage is 120 volts AC.  In Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and much of South America the voltage is 230 volts.  These standards are only loosely followed and voltages in individual homes can vary as much as 20%.

Voltages in homes vary due to times of day or night, how many people are using the power at any one time, times of season (heavy use of air conditioners).

Unstable voltages are also a result of usage within the home itself as when a heavy draw for an air conditioner, electric heater, appliance kick in.

To achieve maximum performance of an AV system it is necessary to have a fixed and steady source of AC voltage.

The only way to ensure a steady source of AC voltage is to have a [[regulated voltage]], such as that supplied by a [[PS Power Plant]].
