This can refer to many different cable types available on the market. The most popular for sound are SPDIF (optical) and Digital Coax (coaxial) but there is also a balanced format transmitted on XLR cables called AESEBU. This is uncommon with consumer level equipment. If video is transmitted digitally it will be done via HDMI or DVI. Note that HDMI can also carry the audio signal.
