Where to download audiophile grade music ?

To download from, I know:

http://www.bluecoastrecords.com - I downloaded some good stuff.
http://www.hdtracks.com : But I am from Europe and, strangely, you are not allowed to download from Europe (very annoying)

To buy real discs from, I know:
http://www.referencerecordings.com
http://www.chesky.com

But I am looking for downloads… so somebody has some good internet links ?

One thing that I am not so happy with, is that most of audiophile grade music I found is based on beautiful voices, beautiful guitars, piano, classical music,... But I am also looking for something more living, and something with drums or deep bass… I would like to check how my Martin Logan speakers handle good quality drums or deep bass.

Any download ideas ?

Thanks

Touch and Go Records has some 24-bit wav files available for purchase. I didn’t go through the entire catalog, but I did see that Shellac’s “Excellent Italian Greyhound” can be downloaded in 24-bit (not sure what the sampling rate is) for the same price as MP3 and 16-bit wavs ($16).
I have sent Touch and Go a list of questions regarding their 24-bit downloads and will post any reply here.

You have to try these works from the following sites.  All are superb!

Naim Label
Phantom Limb - FLAC 24bit 48kHz
http://www.naimlabel.com/recording-phantom-limb.aspx

I like “Don’t Say a Word”, “Spring Flowers”, “I’ll Never be the Same”.

Linn Records
Alyn Cosker - Lyn’s Une - FLAC 24bit 96kHz
http://www.linnrecords.com/recording-Lyn-s-Une-Alyn-Cosker-drums-jazz.aspx

I like nearly every second of this one.  But I’m a drummer and so is Alyn.  Very funky, roaringly passionate jazz.

Linn Records
Gareth Williams Power Trio - Shock! - FLAC 24bit 44.1kHz
http://www.linnrecords.com/recording-shock-gareth-williams-power-trio.aspx

Just a great recording.  So open and spacious and dynamic.  Great music too!

Enjoy-  Steve

I second the concern about not being able to download from HDtracks unless you happen to live in the US. They have a good variety of music, some of which is in high res flac files. I wrote them and they sited problems with lisencing from some lables…... as with any other formats, if there is not sufficient choise of software, the high res format will continue to be “hobbled”.

I’ll contact David Chesky for us and find out.  I am sure David would love to have you download his catalog and frankly it makes no sense to me that he doesn’t allow it overseas.

Do keep in mind, however, that this is all new cutting edge stuff.  All of it will be available soon enough.

Paul, Neil,

No problem anymore with Hdtracks.
I Should have updated the thread - sorry about that.
Actually, it didn’t work when I tried to pay directly with my credit card, but it works when I pay via paypal account. I have downloaded between 5 and 10 records since from Europe, an it works fine.
Their downloading system is really good. So I guess the problem was more linked to payment guarantee than to agreements with labels. Or there is a security breach - But.. it works, via Paypal.

I’m not sure if it’s pukkah to mention a competitor on this web site, but hi-fi manufacturer Linn have a recording arm called

Linn Records.

As you might expect, their recording standards are sky high, and their more recent releases are designated “Studio Master” status, and are available for download as high-def FLAC and WMA files at 24bit, 192kHz (for the latest ones). Linn Records also seem to be a distribution point for other select high quality audiophile labels around the world, so the website is well worth browsing if you’ve got the high-def itch. 30-second sounds samples are included of all tracks, so you can listen in depth(ish).

The Linn factory and recording studios are based in Eaglesham, Scotland, not 20-miles from my mother’s house, so by buying from Linn, you’ll be helping the local economy, and the Scottish people will be grateful, as will the sheepdogs.

The top price for a hi-res album seems to be $27.

Oops! In my half-asleep state I accidentally pushed the wrong button and created a new post instead of updating the last one. The new site doesn’t allow me to to delete this entry, so I’ll include a picture of a listening chair designed for kilted Scotsmen to fill up the space.
