Power Director More Info

Starting at just $1,995.00!

The Power Director 4.7 is a stand-alone power management device that incorporates four of our popular Ultimate Outlets in one computer controlled chassis.

While not a Power Plant, the Power Director is specifically designed to handle an entire system's worth of equipment - with no wattage restrictions whatsoever - something a Power Plant cannot do.

The Power Director offers a stunning improvement to both audio and video performance as well as protecting your equipment perhaps more effectively than any other product in the world.

On the rear of the Power Director are 14 Power Port receptacles that are separated into four isolated zones.  Each zone is capable of handling power in a non-limiting fashion and will provide 100% protection, 40 dB of cleaning and isolation between zones and is fully controllable from the Power Director's front panel.

Performance
The Power Director brings a system wide level of improvement to both audio and video setups that is absolutely unparalleled in our experience. Video pictures come alive with a three dimensionality that is simply breathtaking when powered by the Director.

Power amps and both analog and digital audio equipment take on a new depth and openness with a completely unrestricted level of performance that will both astound and please at the same time.

The PS Audio Total System Approach
The Power Director not only provides and controls the power, but does so with four isolated zones of dedicated power. Maximum product protection and performance is also ensured using our new TPP 3-level protection system, load impedance reduction and up to 40DB reduction of all types of line noise.

Each zone is labeled for a specific group of products to maximize the benefits of electrical isolation. Analog devices such as preamplifiers, turntables, phono preamps are grouped into zone one. The second zone is for digital devices such as CD players, DACs, and video processors. Zone's three and four handle either multiple powers amplifiers, receivers, or integrateds, as well as projectors, TV's and RPTV's. And of course any zone can be used to power a PS Audio Power Plant to further ensure total perfection in the power received by your components.

All zones are actually identical circuits, and the separation with regards to analog and digital are for reference only. One of our favorite features of the Power Director is that you can use any of the four zones to in any unique configuration that is applicable to your particular situation.

Triple Power Protection
The Power Director employs PS Audio's brand new and ground-breaking Triple Power Protection (TPP) system that relies on a microprocessor-based measuring system, Tranzorbers, and a magnetic circuit breaker to make absolutely certain that nothing unwanted gets through the Director to your valuable equipment it is powering.

The first line of defense is perhaps the best and quickest method of protection we have ever seen. Microprocessor based, the system uses our new PowerMeter measurement software that is accurate to within one percent, as a first line of defense. When the input AC voltage exceeds a pre-set limit (user adjustable), the outputs simply switch off and connected equipment is protected. When the voltage returns to normal, the outputs turn back on, again according to their sequenced instructions.

If the first line of defense fails, a second level of defense kicks in, using PS Audio's proprietary Tranzorber circuitry. In the unlikely event the Tranzorbers are asked to absorb too much power, an internal fuse opens, completely shutting off the outputs thus protecting connected equipment.

The last line of defense is a rear panel magnetic circuit breaker that will automatically trip if too much current is passing through the unit.

Unparalleled Communication Features
There are virtually no power distribution and protection devices on the market that communicate with the rest of your system as well as the Power Director does. In fact, one of the key features of the Power Director is the level of communication via the home automation buss which is AMX/Panja & Crestron compatible, as well as our own internal PS Buss.

Using the supplied PS Buss the Power Director can communicate with any PS gear connected to it with a similar PS buss. You can have one piece of PS equipment turn on all other PS equipment, or the system can also report power problems, and other communications tasks when needed. Further, the Director comes with a remote control. You can use the PS remote to train any learning remote (like the popular Pronto remote) to understand PS commands (Pronto command sets are available pre-programmed from us). This is valuable inside of a rack if you want the PS equipment to control every other piece of gear that has infrared remote capabilities.

The Director, as well as many new PS products coming soon, provide an optional interface with any home automation system via a Panja, Crestron, or AMX serial interface card. Once the interface card has been installed in any single piece of PS Audio equipment, you can then use the internal PS buss to connect every PS Audio piece with the home automation buss. So, you need only purchase one AMX serial interface card, and all PS equipment can communicate through that one card.

Inside the Director
Inside, there are four high current Ultimate Outlet circuits, each individually capable of delivering 20-amps of power that has a reduced output impedance by a factor of three! No other power conditioner can make the same claim.

This is a big claim, but is accomplished by using precision-wound baluns-highly efficient transformer cores with identical, balanced windings wrapped around each half of a donut-shaped toroid. Wound with extremely heavy gauge pure copper wire and terminated in a network of Class X2 and Class Y2 film capacitors. Each of the four Ultimate circuits feeding the individual zones is hand-wired with 12 gauge, multi-strand OFC copper in a star configuration that enhances the separation of circuits and improves isolation.

Electrical zone and noise isolation is provided both in and out. This means that each of the four zones is isolated from each other, and from the equipment that each zone powers. This is important because digital devices as well as video and high power equipment generate noise and interference that will negatively affect the audio and video performance of other equipment sharing the same power source.

The Power Director solves this problem with the Ultimate Outlet technology inside. Each precision wound balun acts as a no-way gate for noise both from the AC line as well as from the equipment itself. The 'gate' will not let noise past the Ultimate balun either from the equipment or from the line.

Sonically, and visually, these circuits make more improvement to both the way your system sounds and looks than virtually any other system oriented device we have ever seen. Bar none!

User controllable
As the ultimate device for powering a custom system with interconnectivity, the Power Director performs switching and network command functions required by today's sophisticated, highly demanding custom home A/V environments. The Power Director is especially unique in enabling customers to preset the input voltage before any protection circuitry is activated, and adjust the delay time before the unit resets itself and powers back up. These parameters are of course user adjustable, or you may choose to use the factory default settings.

Factory defaults, plug and play
If you use the default settings from the factory, the Power Director is literally a 'plug and play' device. Simply plug it into any AC outlet, connect your equipment up to the Power Ports on the rear of the unit, and hit the 'on' button. The Power Director is factory preset to work flawlessly under these conditions. If an over or under voltage condition is sensed, the Power Director will immediately switch off the load to protect it. The Director will then continuously monitor the line voltage until it feels the situation is back to normal, and then begin the power up sequence.

Or, program it yourself
In some cases, it may be advantageous to have several of the Director's four zones sequence on in a delayed fashion, or in a non-standard fashion. It may also be desirable to change the high and low voltage settings to either a closer tolerance for increased protection or loosen the requirements if the type of equipment you are powering is amenable to a more extreme range of voltages.

These parameters are all easily adjustable by the user both from the front panel and from the rear panel.

Moving first to the rear panel, there are four three-position slide switches to adjust. Each zone can be set to come on immediately when the Director is plugged in, switched on and off manually from the front panel, or you can choose to have it in the delay mode.

As an example, one might want all the analog and digital sources powered by zones one and two to come on with the front panel switch, and then have zones three and four automatically cycle on after a few seconds. This will allow your sources to come on and stabilize before turning on the power amplifier or video devices.

From the front panel, the length of delay can be adjusted from one to ten seconds for each of the four zones.

Front panel controls and display
The Power Director is the first PS product to feature our new PowerMeter circuit. With nearly a year in the design invested in its circuitry, the PS PowerMeter can read power, voltage, wattage, and even power factor with excellent accuracy.

Users can measure the incoming AC voltage, read the watts and amperage being delivered to the load on an instantaneous basis, and the system will even calculate the real time rms power factor being delivered to the load.

Power Factor, is a little technical, but is calculated by the Power Director's internal computer using the following formula: real power divided by the apparent power. What this means (in a nutshell) is that the term 'watts' has several different interpretations, and Power Factor describes how close to an ideal load you are.

An ideal load is (for instance) a light bulb. A light bulb draws power in an ideal way, meaning the reading will be identical for both 'real power' and 'apparent power'. Most amplifiers and preamplifiers draw power in a non-ideal way, and we are measuring how far from ideal your total load is.

If you were powering only light bulbs, the Power Director would read '1' when you went to view Power Factor on the front panel. If you were powering a single solid state amplifier, then the Power Factor meter would read 0.7. If you had a combination of tube and solid state devices, then Power Factor would be somewhere in between these two readings.

By knowing the power factor, one can judge the overall efficiency of the load.

Controls
Buttons on the front panel of the Director are fairly straightforward: on, off, mode, edit. You can adjust the delay for each of the four zones, adjust the high and low voltage cut out points for the TPP protection circuitry, and view any of the measurement data available.

A four-digit LED readout on the front panel displays settings for voltage, wattage and power factor correction. It can be turned off completely in media-room applications.

Rear panel
The board for the Power Director's main input module includes three CATV inputs and CATV outputs for cable and antenna protection, one phone input and two outputs for telephone protection, four slide switches to control the output delay, a 15-amp Resetable circuit breaker, a 15-amp IEC input, a 12-volt external trigger input, a PS buss that serves as a communication link for all PS Audio components, and a Panja Crestron interface slot for an off-the-shelf Panja card that allows customers to interface with CE-buss equipped products.

The Power Director's internal input power supply can accept 90-300 volts with no user switching necessary.

Uses for the Power Director
The Power Director can be used as a stand-alone piece to power an entire system, as one of several Power Directors to power a large system or to separate an audio/video system.

Power Directors are available with the industry standard 15-amp inlet, thus providing between 1800 and 2200 watts of power. This is enough to handle most any size system.

Using several Power Directors
There will be a number of high-end applications for both audio and video that require more than one Power

Director. Uses include one for the audio setup and another for the video setup, or when more than four zones of isolation are required.

Power Directors use our exclusive PS Buss as standard equipment. This allows interconnection between PS equipment, and you can connect multiple Power Directors together in such a fashion that the first Power Director will sequence its equipment on, followed by the next Power Director in line.

Power Director
The Power Director can be mounted on a rack, with the optional rack slide in tray, and includes a detachable power cord and a front panel NEMA outlet for simple rack and cabinet accessibility.
