It's our words

In yesterday's post, I suggested fuses don't make products sound better in the same way an elixir or magic potion does. Instead, aftermarket fuses shore up the tiny wire restricting AC power and make things sound less bad.

The difference is all in our words, which might seem inconsequential to some, but I assure you they are important.

Words and phrases make up minds. "Beeswax sounds better…" might be true in some cases but its implication is that the material imparts a sound like a spice adds flavor. I suspect the truth is closer to a matter of more or less attrition rather than an added sweetener or clarifier.

Consider the term I like to use. "Make the speakers disappear." How can the largest physical objects in the room suddenly turn invisible?

Of course, this means you can't tell where the sound is coming from, not that they've mysteriously vanished.

Tomorrow let's focus (not to make a pun) on helping our systems disappear.
