Not so golden ears

In my post about Golden EarsI mentioned it was easy for anyone to hear what high-end systems have to offer - even the UPS man.
HP (Harry Pearson) sent me back a note that read:
"The ears have little to do with it
it's what the brain makes of what the ears hear
thus, a golden ear is someone
who knows how to listen, who knows the sound of music"
Indeed. I have friends in the industry with severe hearing impairments that are better than most I know for figuring out what's good and bad in a system.
As HP suggests it isn't your ability to hear, it's your memory of what music should sound like through those ears.
