Breaking the rules

Prev Next

There's an old adage "the rules are made to be broken". But how many of us actually are comfortable breaking the rules?

Picture yourself on a lonely country road approaching a 4-way intersection. You can see for miles in every direction and there's no one in sight. Do you stop or blow right through the intersection? I make a point of going right through, but I always have a twinge of guilt.

Playing by all the rules is safe but boring. When we dare to step outside our element, better things happen.

In my 40 years of designing audio equipment, I always made a point of questioning every rule in the book and breaking as many as I could.

Another word for rule breaking is innovation.
