The second 90%

What do the Space Shuttle and the PerfectWave products have in common? They were both sketched out on a napkin in a matter of moments.

Most products come to life that quickly - over lunch - in a meeting that's less than an hour - cooked up in someone's head - all in just a very few minutes.

People seem to have this idea that most of the product development time is spent in meetings hashing out the details and then finally implemented in short order. That's rarely true.

I'll bet most great products were hatched in moments, worked on for months or years and then released.

As our chief engineer is fond of saying, "you have a great idea, then spend the first 90% engineering it and the second 90% getting it to work".
